Nigeria’s basic education system is at a crossroads. Despite progress in other sectors, deep-rooted challenges threaten the nation’s development with a staggering 70% of Nigerian children unable to read with meaning by age 10 (Daily Trust, 2024). This “learning poverty” places Nigeria among the hardest-hit low and middle-income countries, with millions of children locked out of opportunities to thrive (Vanguard, 2025).

This is more than an educational issue; it also raises concerns about equity and opportunity. A universal truth exists: foundational literacy and numeracy are the cornerstones of all learning. These foundational skills build confidence, open pathways to higher education or vocational training, and empower individuals to contribute meaningfully to their communities and economies. Literacy and numeracy are not just academic milestones—they are tools of empowerment.

At Mavis Computel, we are on a mission to reimagine learning for children left behind by traditional systems. Our flagship innovation, the Mavis Talking Book & Pen, is transforming education delivery. This offline, screen-free tool provides foundational literacy and numeracy lessons in languages children understand, enabling self-paced learning in environments where classrooms may not exist—whether in homes, community clusters, or conflict zones.

Our ambitious Vision 5:30 aims to reach five million out-of-school children by 2030, transforming futures and breaking cycles of illiteracy and inequality. Each child we reach is a step toward a brighter, more equitable Nigeria.

Nigeria’s education challenges are daunting, but they are not insurmountable. By prioritizing foundational learning, fostering innovation, and building strategic partnerships, we can create a future where every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive. We never get tired of witnessing firsthand how our Talking Books deliver easy, fun, and immediate learning outcomes. The EdTech Festival hosted by and gave us that chance yet again.

Children from different schools were excited to learn new languages like French and Igbo right there and then—simply by tapping and repeating what they heard.

We also got to present our Talking Book solution for out-of-school children to other stakeholders who attended the program. This gave us the opportunity to connect with potential partners and explore areas of collaboration.
