It is common to talk about the myriad of reasons victims stay in abusive relationships or how abusers cycle between violence and remorse. But what if we backed up a bit to what underlies violence?
Could we trace domestic situations to the inability to constructively resolve conflict? Do abusers know how to share feelings in a healthy and respectful manner? Have victims been taught to ignore their own feelings and needs to appease others?
Acquiring conflict resolution skills helps to change the way members of the family unit communicate, reducing violence.

Su***de is a global phenomenon that has a deep consequence on not just the dying person but also on the bereaved, the community and society at large.
Despite being preventable, close to a million people die by su***de every year across the globe, with the low and middle-income countries accounting for approximately 80% of the global su***des.
Nigeria with a population of over 200 million is one of the epicentres of su***de in the world with a su***de estimate of 17.3 per 100,000, which is higher than the global su***de estimate (10.5 per 100,000) and Africa's su***de estimate (12.0 per 100,000) estimates. According to global statistics, since 2012 there has been an increase in su***de in the country.
The country currently ranks as the highest number of depression cases in Africa, a key factor in the rising cases of su***des in the country. It can be said that the country's high depression cases is due to the inability of the said individuals to resolve their intrapersonal conflict. And one cannot blame them for this inability, as the necessary skills needed to resolve these conflicts aren't imbibed in our educational curriculum.

The north-eastern crisis has displaced more than 2 million Nigerians, leaving 228,000 refugees without a home. The ongoing conflict has resulted in food insecurity, as a large proportion of the north-eastern population have restricted access to food.
Blocked access to health care, and restricted education are also effects of the unresolved conflict in the region, with 57 percent of schools in Borno alone not being in a condition to reopen, and 1,400 schools destroyed in the region. The constant threat of violence, hunger and poverty prevents children from progressing and becoming educated, posing dangerous long-term effects for current and next generations.
These often violent conflicts, which killed 2,500 people in 2016 alone, have led to an annual loss of around $13.7 billion to the country. The violence and fear being spread has further intensified the existing 53.5 percent poverty rate in the country.
An end to these conflicts could potentially increase family income in the country up to almost 210 percent. From the above-mentioned statistics, it is evident that conflict in Nigeria is worsening poverty.
