Thrilled to have represented Educational Trust Foundation at the UN House Abuja. We are honored to contribute to the national conversation on 'Shifting the youth narrative from despair to hope'.

Last week, our team had the incredible opportunity to contribute to the national conversation on 'Shifting the Youth Narrative from Despair to Hope at the UN House Abuja. It was a powerful experience to connect with global leaders, youth activists, and change-makers who are dedicated to shifting the youth narrative from despair to hope.

At the heart of the discussions was the urgent need to address the challenges facing young people in Abuja, Nigeria and the clarion call for us to be Change makers. We were inspired by the innovative solutions and bold ideas being shared, and we're committed to doing our part to create a brighter future and be a change maker in our sphere of influence.

Think about what you will do for your community and not what your community will do for you - Dr Uju Agomoh

YOUTHS AS LEADERS TODAY, NOT TOMORROW

In a rapidly evolving world, the role of young people as leaders is more crucial than ever. Historically, leadership has often been associated with age and experience, but today's challenges demand fresh perspectives, innovative solutions, and the energy that young leaders bring. Recognizing and empowering youths as leaders today, not just as future potential, can drive significant positive change across all sectors of society in so many ways:

1. INNOVATION AND FRESH PERSPECTIVES : Young people often bring new ideas and innovative solutions to problems. Their fresh perspectives can challenge the status quo and drive progress.
2. ENERGY AND PASSION : Youths typically have high levels of energy and passion. This enthusiasm can inspire others and drive significant change
3. TECHNOLOGICAL SAVVY: Growing up with technology, young people are often more adept at using digital tools and platforms, which are essential for modern leadership and communication
4. ADAPTABILITY: Youths tend to be more adaptable and open to change. This flexibility is crucial in a rapidly changing world.
5. REPRESENTATION AND INCLUSIVITY : Involving young people in leadership ensures that their voices and concerns are represented. This inclusivity can lead to more equitable and just outcomes
6. BUILDING FUTURE LEADERS: Allowing youths to lead today helps them develop the skills and experience needed for future leadership roles
7. ADDRESSING YOUTH-SPECIFIC ISSUES: Young leaders are more likely to understand and prioritize issues that specifically affect their generation, such as climate change, education reform, and mental health.

Empowering young leaders today not only benefits them but also strengthens communities and societies as a whole.

Empathy is the ability to put yourself in the shoes of someone else and understand what they are feeling or experiencing. In the early years of life, young children are naturally ego-centric and are very much inclined to think mostly about themselves and their immediate needs. They’re not yet ready to consider the needs and feelings of others. But developing a sense of empathy is an important developmental process for young children, and one that can benefit them not only in childhood but well into adult life as well.

WHY IS DEVELOPING EMPATHY IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN?

Building an understanding of what others are feeling, how their own actions can impact on others, and why someone might be experiencing feelings at a particular time is a valuable life skill for children to possess.

Helping young children to develop a strong sense of empathy is beneficial because:

1. It helps them to build a sense of security and stronger relationships with other children and educators, positioning them well for learning
2. It encourages tolerance and acceptance of others
3. It promotes good mental health
4. It promotes social harmony and can reduce the likelihood of bullying.

The benefits of empathetic thinking flow into adult life too. Empathetic adults may have:

1. Greater success personally and professionally
2. Higher levels of overall happiness
3. A better ability to understand others, like customers or co-workers
4. More success in leadership positions
5. More satisfying relationships and be better at dealing with conflict
6. Lower levels of stress

In a nutshell, developing empathy is a vital building block in a child’s ability to regulate their emotions and is so valuable in being able to adapt and succeed in an ever-changing world.

A positive mindset is essential for creating happiness. This doesn't mean ignoring life's challenges or pretending that everything is perfect. Instead, it's about reframing our thoughts and beliefs to focus on solutions rather than problems. By cultivating an optimistic outlook, we can navigate life's ups and downs with resilience and grace.
