---The Power of One Idea---

At just six years old, Ryan Hreljac noticed a serious problem: children in Uganda lacked access to clean water. Most would have thought it was too big, too far, or simply not their responsibility. But Ryan did something different. He took action.

He started small, raising money through chores, determined to make a difference.

With just a few dollars, he built his first well. That single act changed lives.

Today, his Ryan’s Well Foundation has brought clean water and sanitation to hundreds of thousands of people across multiple countries.

Ryan’s story is a powerful reminder for every aspiring leader and entrepreneur: visionary leadership starts with one idea and the courage to act. You don’t need to wait for the perfect moment, the perfect resources, or the perfect age. Impact begins when you take the first step.

At GEM Business School, we teach our learners to think like visionaries: to see problems as opportunities, and to transform ideas into meaningful action.

Leadership research, including insights published in Harvard Business Review, shows that visionary or transformational leadership fuels innovation and long-term performance. Visionary leaders see possibilities long before others do.

Steve Jobs embodied this mindset. He didn’t wait for customers to define the future of his company. Instead, he imagined the future and built it.

Africa has its own example in Ashish J. Thakkar, founder of Mara Group. At a time when many doubted Africa’s readiness for advanced technology, he envisioned a continent building its own tech products. His launch of Mara Phones, one of Africa’s early smartphone manufacturing plants, reflects the power of bold, future-driven thinking.

Today, we celebrate both leaders because they remind us of a simple truth:
Vision doesn’t follow trends; it creates them.

"My business suffered a major loss. How do I rebuild confidence in myself and my team?"
— Entrepreneur

"Realize that crisis reveals character. Tough times pull us out of our comfort zones and allow our inner strength to emerge. When your business is hit by setbacks, be transparent with your team. Challenges are not meant to be faced alone. You need the strength and support of every committed member around you. Communicate clearly, refocus everyone on the mission, and lean on your support base."

On this day in history...

On October 22, 1879, Thomas Alva Edison and his team at Menlo Park in New Jersey achieved a major breakthrough: using a carbonised thread filament, their bulb burned bright for many hours and became the first truly practical incandescent light bulb.

This remarkable innovation laid the foundation for modern electrical lighting and triggered the global electrification of homes, industries, and businesses.

At GEM Business School, we celebrate timeless moments like this — milestones that remind us how one bright idea can transform the world.
