Today, I would like to point out that partnership, just as with everything else in business, comes with its own troubles. The worst thing that can happen to you is to get into partnership with the wrong people; people who do not have or understand your vision, who do not have the same drive and level of motivation that you have or who do not have anything else other than money to bring but who want to have as much control over the business operation and strategies as you do. It can be a nightmare.
So, if you are open to growing your business through partnerships, ensure that you have the following before you proceed.
1. A partner who shares in your vision, ambitions and excitement.
2. A partner who understands business and have skills that complement your set of skills. The ideal partner should be strong in areas where you consider yourself to be weak.
3. A solid legal structure that protects your interest, the interest of your business and the interest of the partnership. Never go into partnership based on just verbal agreement.
Remember, you are not looking for an easy way out. In business, there are no easy way outs. You have to find a way to do the difficult things that will grow you and your business. So, this post is not to scare you away from partnerships but to prepare you to take on the opportunity whenever a good one arises. Until you find the right partnerships, keep working on yourself and the structures in your business. All the best.

The fashion landscape in Africa is changing.
In Nigeria, we are beginning to see a revolution, a transition from fashion as a skill to fashion as a business.
A couple of years before now, those at the top of the industry where those who were really skilled and talented. Today, skill and talent is no longer enough to take you to the top. To be close to the top today, you need business management skills, communication skills, ability to lead or work effectively within a team, sales skills and the ability to brand and market your craft.
Fashion is transitioning from a second choice industry to a very professional industry. As the level of creativity rises and customers demand more sophisticated styles of clothing, your fashion must go beyond sewing and design.
If you're a skilled or talented designer, please don't settle. Look at those who are at the top right now and learn the things they can do which you currently can't or don't do. Invest in your upgrade. Aim to be globally relevant even as the world turns their attention to African fashion. A few years from now, the competition will be so serious that only those who prepare today will stand out.
I wish you all the success.

If you are learning tailoring or fashion designing or just rounded up with your training and would like to set up your own business, read this.
Many times people graduate from fashion academies and have no money to start up their fashion business. Here are some ways that you can raise the money to start.
1. Work for Someone as a Tailor, Designer, etc. This needs no explanation. You work as an employee, receiving salary or commission of whatever you sew or make and saving until you can buy your own equipments and set up your own business.
2. Tap into the Gig Economy: The gig economy is the world of freelancing where you offer your services independently and get paid for it. Some of you have formal higher education and are very talented in other areas outside fashion. Others don't have formal education but have valuable skills that people need.
Examine what you are good at that people can pay for. It could be graphics designing, Logo designing, data entry, writing, etc. Just anything that you can do repeatedly within a month and be paid off. Offer those services and save the money for your fashion business dreams. Don't be mistaken into thinking that the capital you need to set up your business must come from fashion. Money is money. The aim is to establish your own fashion business.
3. Sell Something! As a trained designer, you now have better ideas about styles and what people like to wear or how they like to appear. You can buy and resell those things or you can find a supplier that trusts you, get supplies from them, sell and pay back the money. Another way is to partner as an affiliate, selling for other people and receiving a commission.

Good businesses are like a machine consisting of several moving parts. If one part fails, the entire machine shuts down.
The best businesses are made up of systems. Each system has to function effectively for the overall success of the business. Which system of your fashion business isn't functioning well? Is it Production? Is it Marketing? Is it Finance? Is it Customer Service? Which one is it? Identify it and fix it.
If you don't know what business systems are or how to create them and transform your hustle into a real business, read Fashion Beyond Sewing
