THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S NEW POLICY ON MATHEMATICS REQUIREMENT

The recent announcement by the Federal Government of Nigeria that Mathematics will no longer be compulsory for students in Arts and allied subjects marks a significant shift in our educational landscape.

At ZOE KIDS MONTESSORI, we recognize and appreciate the intention behind this reform — to remove unnecessary barriers and create broader access to tertiary education. For years, many gifted and creative students have been held back by a single subject that, though valuable, may not directly align with their chosen career paths. This policy therefore acknowledges the diversity of talents and the need to give every learner a fair chance to excel.

However, while we welcome this inclusive approach, we also believe it is important not to diminish the value of mathematical literacy. Even in the Arts, the ability to think logically, interpret data, manage budgets, and analyze information remains essential.

We therefore encourage policymakers to complement this new flexibility with a restructured “Applied Mathematics for Arts” curriculum — one that teaches practical, everyday numerical reasoning rather than advanced abstract concepts. This would preserve the spirit of inclusion without eroding core skills every 21st-century learner needs.

In summary, this is a progressive move, but one that requires thoughtful implementation. Education should not only open doors — it should also equip every child with the tools to navigate life intelligently and confidently.
