From Jabbok to Peniel: How God Transforms Sleepless Nights of Anxiety into Life-Changing Encounters.

Jacob arrived at the Jabbok after more than twenty years of apparent success. He had accumulated wealth, built a family, and prospered in many ways. Yet, on the eve of meeting Esau, he found himself overwhelmed by fear, anxiety, and uncertainty. That night, he was left alone (Genesis 32:24). It became a sleepless night marked not by peace, but by wrestling—with his past, his fears, and ultimately with God.

But Jabbok was not the end of Jacob’s story.

In the darkness of that lonely night, Jacob encountered God in a life-changing way. He emerged wounded, yet transformed. He received a new name—Israel—and he renamed the place Peniel, declaring:

“For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved.” — Genesis 32:30 (NRSV)

The journey from Jabbok to Peniel is the journey from anxiety to assurance, from striving to surrender, from fear to faith.

Perhaps you are living through your own Jabbok—a season of sleepless nights, unanswered questions, hidden fears, or deep emotional emptiness. Take heart. The very place of your greatest struggle may become the place of your greatest encounter with God.

May your Jabbok become your Peniel. May your sleepless nights give way to a face-to-face encounter with the God who transforms lives, blesses the broken, and gives a new future.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18

I am deeply grateful to the Ohafia National Organization (ONO) for the privilege of inviting me to serve as the Conference Speaker at the 2026 Ohafia National Convention in Houston, Texas, held on July 24–25, 2026.

It was an honour to engage with fellow Ohafians on the theme, “Reimagining Culture, Identity, and Faith for Community Development.”

As members of the Ohafia diaspora, may we continue to preserve our rich heritage, strengthen our identity, nurture our faith, and work together for the sustainable development of our communities.

To Every Pastor, Minister, Priest, and Servant of Christ

Sometimes people do not realize the weight carried by pastors, ministers, priests, and all who have answered God’s call. They often stand at the bedside of the dying, counsel the broken, pray for others while carrying their own burdens, and continue serving even when their own hearts are weary.

Too often, they are judged, misunderstood, taken for granted, and taken advantage of because of their calling and the vows they have made before God. They are expected to always be strong, always available, and always forgiving. At times, it can even feel as though the cost of faithful service is invisible.

But God sees.

To everyone who deliberately exploits, disrespects, abuses, or betrays those who faithfully serve the Lord, remember that they are God’s servants. The Lord is just, and He will defend His own in His perfect time.

“Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm.” — Psalm 105:15

To every man or woman of God who feels used, discouraged, disrespected, betrayed, wounded, or exhausted: may the Lord heal your heart, renew your strength, restore your joy, and make you whole.

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles…” — Isaiah 40:31

Your labour is not in vain.

“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain.” — 1 Corinthians 15:58

May God sustain every faithful servant until the day they hear these words: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:23)
