Ẹ káàrọ̀ oo, ṣé ẹ wà dáadáa,

Our practice this week is how to use

"this and that" as demonstrative.--when we point to things.

This - - yìí

That - - yẹn.

Examples.

I want to buy this cloth - - - Mo fẹ́ ra aṣọ yìí

I saw that cloth yesterday - - Mo rí aṣọ yẹn lánàá

I will buy this shoe next week - - Mò máa ra bàtà yìí lọ́sẹ̀ tó ń bọ̀.

My friend likes that phone - - Ọ̀rẹ́mi fẹ́ràn fóònù yẹn.

I don't like that food - - mi ò fẹ́ràn oúnjẹ yẹn.

Kindly send in your examples.

These two words:

Pàdé

They both mean : To meet.

I want to go and meet my friend - - Mò fẹ́ lọ bá ọ̀rẹ́ mi.

She came to meet me yesterday - - Ó wá bá mi lánàá.

Pàdé

This can also be used when we want to meet someone at a specific place or specific time.

Mo fẹ́ pàdé ọ̀rẹ́ mi ní ilé ìtajà - - I want to meet my friend at the store.

Mo máa pàdé Adé ni bẹ̀-----I will meet Adé there.

A máa pàdé lọ́la - - We will meet tomorrow.

Let's learn

We have two Yorùbá words for change.

Yípadà---to change (behavior, character)

Let's look at some examples.

1. I have changed since last year. - - Mo ti
yípadà láti ọdún tó lọ́.

2. I will change my behavior soon - - Mò máa yí ìwà mi padà láìpẹ́.

Pààrọ̀.

3. Mo fẹ́ pààrọ̀ aṣọ mi--I want to change my cloth.

4. Bàtà yìí ò dáa, mo fẹ́ pààrọ̀ ẹ̀---This shoe is not good, I want to change it.

Before you go out spreading information.

Kindly confirm and verify if it true.

Our Yorùbá proverb this week is.

Etí tó bá gbọ́ àlọ́ kìí gbọ́ àbọ̀ ni kìí jẹ ki a pé ọmọ ẹni lólè lójú àlejò.

People that hears the beginning of a matter may not hear the conclusion, that's why you don't call your child a "thief" in the present of a visitor.

Think about it.

Examples of words starting with /p/ and /gb/

Hello,

Báwo ni,

One of the challenges that you might face while learning Yorùbá is the difficulty in pronouncing these two sounds /p/ and /gb/.

One thing that I want you to know is that, because these two letters are not in English which you have been speaking, then it might look a little bit difficult.

Hello,

Báwo ni

Hope you have not stopped learning.

Today, let's learn how to express different times in Yorùbá.

**Note**: Our Verbs don't change their tense form, unlike in English, where eat - - - ate, our verb remain constant in all its form.

Most times, we add the time of the action to be specific and to know when the action happens.

"ní" is added before the time, and most times, this "ní" can change to "l"

So let's go.

Ní àárọ̀ (nee arr ror) in the morning

Ní ọ̀sán ( nee or sun) - In the afternoon.

Ní ìrólẹ́ (nee he ror leh) In the early evening between (4-7pm).

Ni alẹ́ (Nee ah leh). In the late evening.

Let's look at some examples.

Mo fẹ́ jẹun ní àárọ̀ - - I want to eat in the morning.

Mo máa jẹun ní ọ̀sán - - I will eat in the afternoon.

Mo lè rí ọ̀rẹ́ mi ní ìrólẹ́ - - I can see my friend in the evening.

Can you construct one simple sentence with the time for me.

I love Proverbs,

Yes, I do.

It gives insight to words and deep meanings.

So what are we learning today.

"Lójú ẹni tí ò jẹun alẹ́, ilẹ̀ a máa pẹ́ kó tó mọ́".

To someone who slept without supper, the dawn of the next day is like forever.

Our desires might not come soon, it might seem forever.

But, let's keep hope alive.

Keep trusting

Keep believing,

Keep hustling,

One day. Everything will be fine.

Yóò dáa.

Hello Yorùbá Proverb lovers,

Let's learn another one today.

"Ìbàjẹ́ ọjọ́ kan kì í tán lógún ọdún"

An evil act of one day doesn't finish in twenty years.

So, you my friend, always remember that first impression last long.

Treat people right,

That nobody of today can become somebody tomorrow

Remember, Table turns.

Yóò dáa.

Hello,

How has the learning been ,

Last week, we discuss how we can express what we want to do and what we often do.

Today, let's look at how we can express future statement both in the positive and negative.

The future marker is "máa" for positive statement.
It changes to " ò ní" in negative statements.

Let's look at some examples.

1. Mo máa jẹun ní ìrólẹ́ - - - I will eat in the evening.
Mi ò ní jẹun ní ìrólẹ́ - - - - - - - I will not eat in the evening.

2. Ó máa wá sí bí ní ọ̀la - - - - He /she (younger) will come here tomorrow.

Kò ní wá sí bí ní ọ̀la------He/she won't come here tomorrow.

3. Adé máa ṣe ìrẹsì láìpẹ́ - - Ade will cook rice soon.
Adé ò ní ṣe ìrẹsì láìpẹ́. - - - Adé will not cook rice láìpẹ́.

4. A máa pè ẹ́ ní ọ̀la------We will call you tomorrow.
We won't call you tomorrow - - A ò ní pè ẹ́ ni ọ̀la.

Vowel deletion in Yorùbá.

Hello,

Báwo ni,

Hope the learning is going well.

Let's discuss Vowel deletion today.

It is very common for Yorùbá speakers to drop a vowel when they are speaking, especially when they are asking Questions.

Most times, you hear

Kí lórúkọ ẹ - - - What is your name?

Kí l'o fẹ́ jẹ - - - - - what do you want to eat?

Níbo lò wà. - - - Where are you?

Níbo lẹ̀ ń gbé - - - Where are you living?

Let's expand it.

1. "Kí l'órúkọ ẹ" is"

kí ni orúkọ ẹ " the" kí ni" is what

2. Kí l'o fẹ́ jẹ - - - Kí ni o fẹ́ jẹ.

3. Níbo ló wà---Níbo ni ó wà - - Where is he/she?

4. Níbo lẹ̀ ń gbé - - Níbo ni ẹ̀ ń gbé.

The "ni" after the question markers always change to "L" when it comes before words that start with vowels O, Ọ, E, Ẹ and A. Hence we have it as

Kí l'o for Kí ni o.

When it comes before words that start with Vowel "I" or consonant, it doesn't change to "L"

Níbo ni ìwé mi wà - - Where is my book?

Níbo ni bàtà mi wà - - - Where is my shoe?

Take note that noun or pronoun comes after the question marker.
