*Cerebral Palsy Awareness: What You Should Know*
*What it is*:
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of disorders affecting movement, balance, and posture. It happens from brain damage or abnormal brain development before, during, or shortly after birth. _It’s not contagious and it doesn’t get worse over time._
*4 Main Types*:
1. *Spastic CP* ∼80% of cases: Stiff muscles, awkward movements
2. *Dyskinetic CP*: Uncontrolled movements in hands, arms, feet, face
3. *Ataxic CP*: Problems with balance and coordination
4. *Mixed CP*: Combination of symptoms
*Early Signs in Babies < 2 years*:
- *Delays*: Not rolling over by 6 months, not sitting by 8 months, not walking by 18 months
- *Muscle tone*: Feels stiff or floppy when you hold them
- *Posture*: Uses only one side of body, or keeps hands fi**ed after 6 months
- *Reflexes*: Exaggerated reflexes or tremors
*Key Facts*:
1. *Most common motor disability in kids*: Affects about 1 in 345 children.
2. *It’s a lifelong condition*: No cure yet, but therapy helps people live full lives.
3. *It’s not just physical*: 30-50% also have intellectual disability, seizures, or vision/hearing issues.
4. *Main risk factors*: Premature birth, low birth weight, infections during pregnancy, birth complications causing lack of oxygen.
*How to Support*:
- *Early intervention is everything*: Physical, occupational, and speech therapy started early = better outcomes.
- *Inclusive language*: Say "person with CP," not "CP person." Disability is one part of them.
- *Accessibility matters*: Ramps, wider doors, and adaptive tech help independence.
*World Cerebral Palsy Day*: October 6. Theme is usually built around inclusion and empowerment. People wear green.
