BRIEF HISTORY OF CHILDREN'S DAY IN NIGERIA..
Children’s Day in Nigeria is celebrated annually on May 27th. It is a day dedicated to honoring children, raising awareness about their rights, and addressing the challenges they face.
Here is a brief history of how this special day came to be in Nigeria:
The Global Roots
The concept of Children's Day originated globally in 1954 when the United Nations General Assembly recommended that all countries institute a Universal Children's Day. The goal was to promote mutual exchange and understanding among children and to initiate action to benefit and promote the welfare of the world's children. While the UN celebrates this day on November 20th, it allowed individual nations to choose their own dates.
Nigeria's Adoption (1964)
Nigeria officially adopted Children's Day on May 27, 1964, under the administration of Nigeria's first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. The establishment of the day was a significant step for the newly independent nation to show its commitment to the growth, education, and well-being of its youngest citizens.
Key Traditional Activities
Over the decades, May 27th has evolved into a highly anticipated holiday for children across the country, characterized by several key events:
Public Holidays: It is observed as a public holiday for primary and secondary school students.
March Pasts: Historically, the hallmark of Children's Day in Nigeria involves colorful parades and "march pasts" held at local stadiums. Schools send delegations of students to march in front of state governors, local government chairmen, and traditional rulers.
Media and Governance: It is customary for the President and state governors to deliver special televised addresses to the children of the nation. In some instances, "Children's Parliaments" are convened to give kids a platform to discuss issues affecting them.
Excursions and Parties: Schools, religious organizations, and NGOs frequently organize parties, funfairs, and educational excursions to parks, museums, and historical sites.
Evolution and Modern Focus
While the day remains a joyous occasion filled with fun and games, its focus has increasingly shifted toward advocacy.
Today, government agencies and child-rights organizations use May 27th to emphasize the implementation of the Child Rights Act (originally adopted at the federal level in 2003). Modern Children's Day campaigns heavily focus on critical issues facing Nigerian youth, including:
Improving access to quality primary education.
Eradicating child labor, trafficking, and street begging.
Ensuring better healthcare and nutrition for every child.
