NAVIGATING A FUTURE NO ONE CAN PREDICT – PREPARING TODAY’S STUDENTS FOR THE FUTURE OF WORK

Undoubtedly, the future will see a significant skill shift as automation and artificial intelligence continue to shape the world of work – and transform the workforce. Even though no one completely knows what the future of work will look like, several reports are being published yearly to keep us updated about the changes.

How do we navigate a future no one can predict? What will today’s students need now for the job of tomorrow? Are schools in this part of the world preparing students for these changes?

In a 2023 report titled “The Skills Revolution and the Future of Learning and Earning” published by The World Government Summit in collaboration with McKinsey & Company, there are valuable insights that can help us equip today’s students to thrive in the future of work.

Here are the major highlights:

✅ The top 3 skills that will be in demand by 2030 in order of magnitude of expected demand, are technological skills, social and emotional skills, and higher-level cognitive skills;

✅ Demand for social and emotional skills such as leadership and managing others will become more important in an increasingly digitalized world. These are intrinsically human skills that are not easily replicated by machines.

✅ Technological skills which encompass basic digital (literacy skills), advanced IT skills, and programming will have the strongest growth in demand and even be felt across non-tech occupations.

✅ As for Cognitive skills, demand will move from basic to higher-level cognitive skills such as creativity, complex information processing, and critical thinking;

✅ Leadership and managing others, critical thinking and decision making, project management, adaptability and continuous learning, basic digital skills, and interpersonal skills and empathy are amongst the top skills that companies across the world are prioritizing;

✅ Cognitive, Interpersonal, Self-leadership, and Digital are the four (4) categories of skills (with a total of 56 foundational skills) identified by research as essential for citizens to thrive in the future of work;

The worrying part is that according to a 2021 report of the WEF in collaboration with McKinsey & Company, most of these skills are not part of most academic programs from early years to university. The next generation of high school graduates will encounter a whole new set of jobs that do not exist yet.

This new landscape will require an expanded definition of student success as they will require the right level of education and training to help them develop the right skills that will help them succeed regardless of the job market.
