Nine-year-old Helene’s happy place is her school.

Ongoing violence in DR Congo forced her to flee Rugari with her family and settle in a primary school compound in north Kivu province.

Helene couldn’t study in the new school due to a lack of space in the classrooms.

This affected her greatly. Her mother saw her crying often, refusing to eat food and growing distant from the rest of the family.

Earlier this year, UNICEF and partners helped construct three temporary learning spaces within the school compound, allowing Helene to find a seat in one and resume her education.

Her mother is relieved to see her smile again, while her teachers say she is a very diligent student.

UNICEF is committed to ensuring education .
