NURSE’S GUIDE: PROTECTING YOUR BABY FROM ANENCEPHALY THROUGH PROPER PRENATAL CARE
Dear Expectant Mothers, Your Health Matters!
As a nurse, we always remind our patients that a healthy pregnancy starts with proper care even before conception. One of the most serious conditions affecting newborns is anencephaly, a birth defect where the baby’s brain and skull do not fully develop. While this condition is not curable, you can reduce the risk with good prenatal habits.
TAKE YOUR FOLIC ACID DAILY
Ladies, folic acid is your best friend when planning for pregnancy! Taking 400–800 mcg of folic acid daily at least one month before conception and during early pregnancy can prevent neural tube defects like anencephaly. You can get it from prenatal vitamins, leafy greens, beans, citrus fruits, and fortified cereals.
GO FOR EARLY PRENATAL CHECK-UPS
Regular antenatal visits help detect any issues early. Your doctor will recommend ultrasounds and blood tests to check your baby’s development. A simple maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) test can help screen for neural tube defects. Don’t skip your check-ups!
EAT HEALTHY AND LIVE HEALTHY
A balanced diet supports your baby’s growth. Avoid smoking, alcohol, and harmful medications. If you have diabetes or obesity, work with your doctor to manage your health before and during pregnancy, as these conditions can increase the risk of birth defects.
PLAN FOR A HEALTHY FUTURE
If you’ve had a pregnancy affected by anencephaly before, genetic counseling can help assess your risks for future pregnancies. Knowledge is power—make informed choices about your reproductive health.
FINAL ADVICE: YOUR BABY’S HEALTH STARTS WITH YOU
Mothers, your health is the foundation of your baby’s well-being. Start prenatal care early, take your folic acid, eat well, and attend your antenatal visits. With the right steps, we can work together to give your baby the best start in life!
Stay healthy, stay informed, and take care of yourself.
