What is a bending moment?

It’s how much something (like a beam or ruler) wants to bend when you put a force on it.

The simplest bending moment calculation:

If you have a beam like this:

And you put a weight (Force) at one end…

Formula:

\text{Bending Moment} = \text{Force} \times \text{Distance}

🌰 Example:

You press down on a ruler that’s resting on the table edge:

Force = 10 Newtons

Distance from where it’s fixed = 2 meters

Then:

\text{Bending Moment} = 10 \times 2 = 20 \text{ Newton-meters (Nm)}

💡 Meaning:

That “20 Nm” tells you how strongly the beam wants to bend at the fixed point.
