- Carrying oxygen from the lungs to the body's cells through the hemoglobin in red blood cells

- Transporting nutrients from the digestive system to cells, providing energy and supporting growth and repair

- Removing waste products, such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid, from cells and transporting them to organs like the lungs, liver, and kidneys for elimination

- Supporting the immune system by carrying white blood cells to areas of infection or inflammation

- Regulating body temperature by transporting heat from the core to the skin, where it can be lost

- Red blood cells (erythrocytes) carry oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues through the hemoglobin protein

- White blood cells (leukocytes) play a crucial role in the immune system, helping to fight infections and inflammation

- Platelets (thrombocytes) are small, irregularly-shaped cells that help blood clotting, preventing excessive bleeding when a blood vessel is injured

- Plasma is the liquid portion of blood, making up about 55% of its total volume, and carries cells, proteins, and nutrients throughout the body
