📖 SCHOOL STORIES — NEW SERIES

THE NOTE IN THE SCHOOL BAG

Episode 8 — The Visitor

Nobody moved.

The voice outside the storehouse had left them completely silent.

David stood behind Mrs. Ada, breathing heavily.

The administrator slowly raised his finger to his lips.

“Shhh…”

Then came another knock.

Knock. Knock.

“Open the door,” the voice said.

Mrs. Ada recognized the voice.

But she couldn't believe what she was hearing.

She moved closer to the administrator and whispered,

“Who is that?”

He didn't answer.

Instead, he slowly walked towards the door.

Just before he reached it, the footsteps moved away.

They waited.

One second.

Two seconds.

Five.

Then the administrator opened the door.

The corridor was empty.

Whoever had been there was gone.

Mrs. Ada stepped outside.

She looked left.

Nothing.

She looked right.

Nothing.

Then David suddenly shouted,

“Ma!”

Mrs. Ada turned.

David was pointing at the ground.

There was a small envelope lying just outside the door.

Mrs. Ada picked it up.

Her name was written on it.

MRS. ADA

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

She looked at it.

And her face changed.

It was a picture of the school.

But it wasn't an ordinary picture.

Several students were standing in front of the building.

Mrs. Ada recognized every one of them.

Daniel was there.

David was there.

And standing behind them…

was the administrator.

But the photograph had been taken before David disappeared.

Mrs. Ada turned the picture over.

There was a message written at the back:

“Ask him what happened that day.”

She slowly looked up.

The administrator was staring at her.

“What?” he asked.

Mrs. Ada held up the photograph.

“Why are you in this picture?”

The administrator's face went pale.

David stepped backwards.

“You know him?” Mrs. Ada asked.

The administrator didn't answer.

“Why were you there that day?”

Still nothing.

Then Daniel's voice suddenly came from behind them.

“Ma…”

Mrs. Ada turned.

Daniel was standing at the end of the corridor.

He looked frightened.

“I remember now.”

Mrs. Ada rushed towards him.

“Remember what?”

Daniel pointed at the photograph.

“I saw them that day.”

“Who?”

Daniel looked at the administrator.

Then he whispered:

“David wasn't the only person who disappeared.”

Episode 7 — The Voice

“That’s impossible…”

Mrs. Ada stared at the recorder.

The voice continued playing.

“If you're listening to this, then David has already told you what he knows.”

Mrs. Ada looked at David.

He lowered his head.

The administrator stepped closer.

“Who is that?”

David didn't answer.

The recording continued.

“You think the missing items are the real problem. They are not.”

Mrs. Ada's heart began to beat faster.

“What does that mean?” she whispered.

The voice continued.

“The things taken from the students were only a test.”

Mrs. Ada looked at David.

“A test for what?”

David finally spoke.

“To see who would notice.”

The administrator stared at him.

“Notice what?”

David looked at Mrs. Ada.

“The person behind everything.”

Suddenly, the recording stopped.

Silence filled the room.

Mrs. Ada pressed the button again.

Nothing.

She tried it a second time.

Still nothing.

Then David suddenly looked frightened.

“Ma…”

“What?”

“There is another recording.”

“Where?”

David pointed at the bottom of the bag.

Mrs. Ada searched through it and found a small memory card hidden inside the lining.

She pulled it out.

The administrator looked at her.

“Don't play it here.”

“Why?”

David answered before he could.

“Because the person who made that recording may still be in the school.”

Mrs. Ada froze.

“What are you saying?”

David looked towards the door.

“I wasn't hiding because I was afraid of what they would do to me.”

He paused.

“I was hiding because I knew they were still looking for this.”

He pointed at the memory card.

Before anyone could say another word, footsteps sounded outside the storehouse.

Step.

Everyone became silent.

Step.

The footsteps came closer.

Mrs. Ada quickly switched off the light.

They stood in complete darkness.

The footsteps stopped directly outside the door.

Then someone spoke.

A familiar voice.

“David… I know you're in there.”

David's eyes widened.

Mrs. Ada covered her mouth.

The administrator slowly reached for the door.

But before he could touch it, the voice spoke again.

“And Mrs. Ada… you should have left the bag alone.”

The three of them looked at one another.

Because whoever was standing outside…

knew everything.

Episode 6 — The Truth

“Please… don’t open that bag.”

Mrs. Ada froze.

That voice.

She knew it.

“David?”

There was silence.

Then, slowly, a figure stepped out from the darkness.

It was David.

His uniform was dusty. His face looked tired, and his eyes were filled with fear.

Mrs. Ada could hardly speak.

“David… where have you been?”

David looked at the administrator, then back at his teacher.

“I wanted to come back,” he whispered. “But I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?” Mrs. Ada asked.

David pointed at the school bag on the floor.

“That bag.”

The administrator carefully picked it up.

“What is inside?”

David shook his head.

“Everything that happened.”

Mrs. Ada opened the bag.

Inside was David’s Mathematics notebook, a small voice recorder, and several sheets of paper.

She picked up the first sheet.

It contained names.

Students’ names.

But beside each name was a date.

“What are these?” she asked.

David swallowed hard.

“I started writing them down after I noticed something strange.”

“What strange thing?”

David looked toward the door of the storehouse.

“Someone had been taking things from students’ bags.”

Mrs. Ada stared at him.

“But why didn’t you tell us?”

“I tried.”

His voice broke.

“That was the day you were called away.”

Mrs. Ada remembered.

David had stood beside her desk that afternoon.

He had wanted to speak.

And she had promised herself she would come back.

But she never did.

David continued.

“The next day, I found out someone knew I had seen something.”

“Who?”

David didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into the bag and brought out the voice recorder.

“I recorded the person talking.”

Mrs. Ada's heart skipped.

“You mean you know who it is?”

David nodded.

“But there is something you need to understand first.”

“What?”

David looked directly at her.

“I didn't write the note for Daniel.”

Mrs. Ada frowned.

“Then who did you write it for?”

David slowly pointed at the bag.

“I wrote it for the person who was supposed to find this.”

Everyone became silent.

Then the recorder suddenly switched on.

A voice filled the small room.

And Mrs. Ada recognized it immediately.

Her eyes widened.

“That's impossible…”

Episode 5 — The Secret

Mrs. Ada stared at the three words written on David's school badge.

“Ask his teacher.”

But she was David's teacher.

What could he possibly want her to tell them?

She returned to the classroom and quietly locked the door.

She needed to think.

Then she remembered something.

Three days before David disappeared, he had stayed behind after class.

He had wanted to speak to her.

But before he could say anything, another teacher had called her away.

She had never gotten the chance to find out what he wanted.

Mrs. Ada suddenly felt uneasy.

“What if he was trying to tell me something?”

She searched through her desk and found the class exercise book she had collected that afternoon.

David's book was among them.

She opened it.

The Mathematics work was complete.

But on the last page, there was something strange.

A drawing.

It looked like the school building.

Beside it were two words:

“Behind here.”

Mrs. Ada immediately remembered the old storehouse behind the school.

It had not been used for months.

She took the administrator with her.

When they reached the building, the door was locked.

The administrator brought out a key.

The door opened with a loud creak.

Inside were old desks, broken chairs and dusty boxes.

Nothing seemed unusual.

Then Mrs. Ada heard something.

A faint sound.

Tap.

She froze.

Then again.

Tap… tap…

Someone was inside.

The administrator switched on his phone flashlight.

They moved slowly towards the back of the room.

Then Mrs. Ada saw a small school bag lying on the floor.

She recognized it immediately.

It was David's.

She reached for it.

But before she could touch it, a voice came from the darkness:

“Please… don't open that bag.”

Mrs. Ada stopped breathing.

Because she knew that voice.

It was David.

Episode 4 — The Empty Seat

Mrs. Ada couldn't stop thinking about what the administrator had told her.

David was missing.

Yet Daniel had seen someone who looked like him inside the classroom.

She needed answers.

The next morning, she quietly asked Daniel to describe exactly what he had seen.

“He was standing beside my desk,” Daniel said.

“Are you sure it was David?”

“I couldn't see his face clearly, ma. But I knew his uniform.”

Mrs. Ada looked towards the classroom.

David's seat was still empty.

His books were still inside his locker.

Everything looked exactly as he had left it.

Then she noticed something.

A small piece of paper was lying underneath David's desk.

She picked it up.

There was only one sentence written on it:

“I didn't leave because I wanted to.”

Mrs. Ada's hands went cold.

She immediately called the administrator.

But before he arrived, Daniel suddenly rushed into the room.

“Ma!”

“What happened?”

“I saw him!”

“Who?”

“David!”

Mrs. Ada followed Daniel outside.

“Where?”

Daniel pointed towards the school gate.

A figure in a school uniform was disappearing around the corner.

Mrs. Ada ran towards the gate.

But by the time she got there, the person was gone.

Then she noticed something on the ground.

A school badge.

She picked it up.

It belonged to David.

She turned it over.

Something had been written on the back.

Three words.

“Ask his teacher.”

Mrs. Ada slowly looked back at the classroom.

And for the first time, she wondered:

Was the note really meant for Daniel... or was someone trying to lead her to the truth?

Episode 3 — The Reason

“I think I know who it was.”

Mrs. Ada leaned forward.

“Who?”

Daniel looked towards the office door.

“I don't know his name.”

“Then how do you know who it was?”

Daniel hesitated.

“He's one of us.”

Mrs. Ada's expression changed.

“One of your classmates?”

Daniel nodded.

“He came to my desk yesterday and asked me if I had seen something.”

“What did he ask you to find?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know. He didn't tell me.”

Mrs. Ada picked up the note again.

“Did he say anything else?”

Daniel was quiet for a moment.

Then he remembered.

“He said, ‘If they ask you anything, don't tell them.’”

Mrs. Ada's heart sank.

“Who said that?”

Daniel finally mentioned a name.

David.

The same student whose seat had been empty for three days.

Mrs. Ada immediately checked the attendance register.

David had been marked absent every day.

But something didn't make sense.

If David had been absent for three days...

How did Daniel see him inside the classroom yesterday?

Mrs. Ada picked up the telephone and called the school administrator.

“We need to talk about David.”

There was silence on the other end.

Then the administrator replied quietly:

“Mrs. Ada… I was hoping you wouldn't ask about him.”

“Why?”

Another pause.

“Because David didn't just stop coming to school.”

“Then what happened?”

The administrator lowered his voice.

“His mother came to the school three days ago and begged us not to tell anyone.”

Mrs. Ada stood completely still.

“Not to tell us what?”

The administrator took a deep breath.

“That David is missing.”

Mrs. Ada looked at the note on her desk.

Suddenly, those seven words made sense.

“Please don't let them know I told you.”

But if David was missing...

Episode 2 — The Question

“Where did you get that?”

Mrs. Ada looked at the administrator.

“I found it inside Daniel's school bag this morning.”

The administrator's face suddenly became serious.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. Why?”

He looked towards the classroom door to make sure nobody was listening.

Then he lowered his voice.

“That handwriting…”

He stopped.

“What about it?” Mrs. Ada asked.

“I've seen it before.”

Before she could ask another question, the school bell rang.

The administrator quickly walked away.

Mrs. Ada stood there, staring at the note.

Who had written it?

And why was everyone suddenly acting as though the little piece of paper was dangerous?

During break time, she called Daniel into her office.

“Daniel, I need you to tell me everything that happened before you found this note.”

Daniel hesitated.

“I didn't do anything, ma.”

“I know. Just tell me what you remember.”

He thought for a moment.

“Yesterday, after school, I came back to get my Mathematics book.”

“Were you alone?”

“Yes.”

“What happened next?”

Daniel looked down.

“I saw someone inside the classroom.”

Mrs. Ada's eyes widened.

“Who?”

“I couldn't see the person's face.”

“What were they doing?”

Daniel swallowed hard.

“They were standing beside my desk.”

Mrs. Ada slowly placed the note on her desk.

“Did you see what the person was wearing?”

Daniel nodded.

Then he said something that made Mrs. Ada's heart skip.

“It was the same school uniform I'm wearing now.”

Mrs. Ada stared at him.

There were only a few students who could have been in the classroom after school.

She reached for the class register.

Then Daniel suddenly added:

“Ma… there's something else.”

“What?”

“I think I know who it was.”
