Excerpt from Our Dart Manipulation Class
Over the week , we explored the power of dart manipulation—one of the most important techniques in pattern making. Darts are not just lines on a pattern; they are tools used to shape fabric so it fits the natural curves of the body.
Students learned that a dart can be moved, rotated, or converted into different design elements without changing the garment’s fit. By slashing and pivoting the pattern, we demonstrated how a basic bust dart can be transferred to various positions such as the shoulder, armhole, neckline, or waistline.
This exercise helps students understand that with a solid basic block, the design possibilities are limitless. What begins as a simple dart can transform into gathers, pleats, tucks, or style lines that define the final garment.
Mastering dart manipulation is a key step in turning technical pattern knowledge into creative fashion design.
