YOUR CHILD MAY NOT BE LAZY. SOMETHING ELSE MAY BE GOING ON.

“She's just lazy.”

“He doesn't like learning.”

“My child is too playful.”

Before we attach the label LAZY, let's pause.

A child who avoids schoolwork may be struggling with something we haven't identified.

Perhaps the task is too difficult.

Perhaps the child doesn't understand the instructions.

Perhaps they lack confidence because they have experienced repeated failure.

Perhaps their foundational reading or numeracy skills are weak.

Perhaps they need more movement and hands-on learning.

Perhaps they are easily distracted.

Perhaps they simply haven't discovered how they learn best.

The behaviour we see is often only the surface of the problem.

Instead of asking:

“Why is my child so lazy?”

Try asking:

“What is making this difficult for my child?”

That question changes everything.

Good teaching is not about labelling a child.

It is about observing, identifying the barrier and providing the right support.

Every child deserves high expectations.

But every child also deserves the right support to reach them.

STOP DOING EVERYTHING FOR YOUR CHILD — YOU MAY BE DELAYING THEIR INDEPENDENCE.

“I’ll do it for you; you’re too slow.”

“I’ll dress you.”

“Give me the shoes.”

“Leave it, I’ll clean it.”

“I’ll pack your bag.”

It may look like love and convenience, but when we constantly do for children what they are capable of doing themselves, we may unintentionally teach them:

“I can't do it without an adult.”

Children need opportunities to practise independence.

Let them:

• Dress themselves
• Pack and arrange their belongings
• Pour their own water
• Put away their toys
• Help set the table
• Clean up small spills
• Choose between appropriate options
• Attempt difficult tasks before we step in

Yes, it may take longer.

Yes, they may make mistakes.

Yes, the result may not be perfect.

But independence is built through practice, not perfection.

As parents and educators, our goal should not be to make children dependent on us.

It should be to gradually make ourselves less necessary for the things they can learn to do independently.

5 THINGS EVERY CHILD SHOULD KNOW BEFORE LEAVING HOME

Dear Parents, before your child steps out this holiday, have this conversation.

Children need more than the instruction “Be careful.”
They need to know what to do when something doesn't feel right.
Teach your child these five simple rules:

1️⃣ KNOW YOUR PARENTS' PHONE NUMBER 📱
Your child should know at least one parent's phone number and their full name. Don't assume they will remember it when they need it.

2️⃣ KNOW YOUR BOUNDARIES 🚶
Teach your child where they are allowed to go—and where they must NOT go without permission. “Stay where I can find you” is a safety rule, not just a warning.

3️⃣ DON'T GO WITH STRANGERS
Teach children never to follow someone they don't know, accept gifts from them, or get into a vehicle with them without permission from their trusted adult.

4️⃣ TRUST YOUR “UH-OH” FEELING ⚠️
If someone or something makes your child uncomfortable, teach them to move away, say NO loudly and seek help. They should never feel guilty for speaking up.

5️⃣ KNOW WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET LOST
Teach your child to stay calm, move to a safe place and approach a trusted adult for help—such as a uniformed security officer, police officer, teacher or a parent with children.

💚 Most importantly, teach them that they can ALWAYS tell you what happened.
No shouting.
No blaming.
No “Why didn't you run?”

Your child must know:

“If something happens, I can tell my parent. My parent will listen to me and help me.”

Before resumption, ask yourself:

👉 Am I giving my child enough attention?
👉 Do I really know what my child is struggling with academically?
👉 Do I listen when my child talks, or am I always too busy?
👉 Do I know what my child watches online and who they interact with?
👉 Am I helping my child develop independence, confidence and good habits?

Don't wait until school resumes before you start paying attention.
Use this holiday to observe your child, talk with them, play with them, read together, teach practical skills and discover their strengths and weaknesses.

And please, make it interesting!
Children learn better when learning feels like conversation, play, discovery and encouragement—not constant pressure.

HOW MUCH SCREEN TIME IS TOO MUCH FOR A YOUNG CHILD?

Parents, let's be honest—how many hours does your child spend on a phone, tablet or TV every day?
Screens can be useful, but young children need more than screens to develop well. They need to talk, play, explore, read, create and interact with people.

For guidance, children under 18 months generally shouldn't have routine screen time, except for video chatting. For children ages 2–5, about 1 hour a day of high-quality content is a commonly recommended limit, preferably with an adult watching and engaging with them.

But don't only ask, "How many hours?"

Ask yourself: "What is the screen replacing?"

Is it replacing sleep, outdoor play, reading, family conversations or hands-on activities?

Instead of giving your child a phone whenever they are bored, try reading a story, solving a puzzle, drawing, singing, building with blocks, playing outside or simply talking together.

Children don't just need more screen time. They need more meaningful experiences.

"Mummy, If That Man Is So Tall, How Does He Fit Inside That Small Car?" 🤔

I will never forget one of my son's childhood questions.
He looked at a very tall man and asked,

"Mummy, if that man is so tall, how does he enter such a small car?"
Another day, he saw someone wearing glasses and asked,
"Why can I see myself in the glasses?"

While riding in a tricycle (keke), he looked outside and asked,

"Mummy, why is the road moving with us?"

To some parents, these questions may sound annoying.

Some would say, "Keep quiet!" "Stop asking too many questions!" "You're disturbing me."

But I saw something different.
I saw a child trying to understand the world.

Curious children are not necessarily naughty children. They are often children whose minds are searching for answers. Their questions are opportunities to teach, explain, and discover how they think.
As parents, let's not silence curiosity. Let's feed it.

Today's endless "Why?" could become tomorrow's scientist, engineer, inventor, teacher, or problem-solver.

And remember this...

A child who is quiet in class is not automatically learning. Likewise, a child who asks many questions is not automatically being stubborn. Every child learns and expresses intelligence differently.

Let's listen more. Let's explain more. Let's encourage more.
