‎The programme also includes a scholarship award to the department’s only female student, reflecting the institution’s dedication to inclusivity and technical education.
‎
‎The Rector, Engr. Dr. Christopher Okoro Kalu, disclosed this on Wednesday during the institution’s monthly Academic Board meeting held at the Polytechnic auditorium.

‎He explained that the introduction of monthly stipends is designed to motivate the students and strengthen their practical engagement as they combine academic training with productive industrial work.
‎
‎In addition, the Rector projected the institution’s vision to position the Polytechnic as a centre of excellence in welding and fabrication in the near future.
‎
‎Speaking during an interaction with journalists at the department, one of the fabricators, Mr. Udodirim, listed some of the machines currently available for production and purchase to include cassava grinding machines, cassava processing machines, kernel crackers and separators, fibre separators, hammer mills, cabinet dryers, block moulding machines, corn shelling machines, feed mixers, boilers and oil press machines.

‎
‎Engr. Clement further disclosed that the Rector had directed that several facilities and equipment used within the institution should be locally fabricated by the department, including seats installed at the new theatre hall and structures at the permanent site.

Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic To Sponsor PGD For Best Graduating Students Across All Schools

‎The Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Prof. Engr. Christopher Okoro Kalu, has announced that the institution will sponsor Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) programmes for its best graduating students across all schools, beginning with the 2024/2025 academic session.
‎
‎The decision was disclosed during an Enlarged Management Meeting on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at the institution’s Council Chamber.
‎
‎Recall that the Governor approved and disbursed a ₦150 million grant in 2024, with ₦1 million awarded to each of 150 beneficiaries drawn from three sets of Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates spanning the 2021/2022 to 2023/2024 academic sessions.
‎
‎In a related development, the ₦100 million grant approved for 100 exceptional graduates of the 2025 set is currently underway.
‎
‎The fund is intended to serve as seed capital for viable, bankable, and scalable business ventures.
‎
‎According to the Rector, the initiative is designed to promote academic excellence and retain high-performing students within the institution.
‎
‎He added that while the polytechnic will fund the PGD programmes, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) is expected to support beneficiaries at the Master’s degree level.
‎
‎“We need to encourage our best students to stay and grow within the system. This will become an institutional policy to motivate undergraduates to strive for excellence, except where individuals choose otherwise,” he said.
‎
‎Prof. Okoro also highlighted ongoing developments at the Osisioma Campus, commending the state government for the construction of a 1.9-kilometre dual carriage internal road network, with seven-metre-wide lanes, alongside water reticulation projects.
‎
‎He assured prospective students of a conducive learning environment in the coming years, noting that work at the site is progressing steadily.
‎
‎The Rector further disclosed that following the restructuring of the School of Science and Industrial Technology (SSIT) into the School of Industrial Sciences and the School of Natural Sciences, the affected units have been directed to relocate to the Osisioma Campus after the first semester examinations in May.
‎
‎In addition, the institution has been selected to benefit from digital enterprise support, including the provision of 200 computer systems and the establishment of a Computer-Based Training (CBT) centre, which will also be sited at the Osisioma Campus.

SEDT Leads Move To Osisioma Campus By April
‎
‎The School of Environmental Design and Technology (SEDT) will become the first to begin academic activities at the Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Osisioma Campus, Aba, from April, ahead of the institution’s full relocation in November.
‎
‎This development followed a visit by the Institution of Surveyors, Abia State Branch, to the Rector, Prof. Engr. Christopher Okoro Kalu, on Thursday, March 26, 2026.
‎
‎During the visit, the Branch Chairman, Vincent Eze (FNIS), outlined plans for collaboration with the polytechnic.
‎
‎He noted that the institution has undergone significant transformation, presenting its current state as a clear departure from the past.
‎
‎Eze praised the Rector’s administration, referring to him as “a gift from heaven,” and added that the institution now commands greater respect than in previous years.
‎
‎“Your good works speak for you. You have embraced a culture of neatness. If no one rewards you, God will,” he said.
‎
‎He also indicated the body’s intention to support the school through the provision of practical equipment and professional manpower, in line with efforts to produce industry-ready graduates.
‎
‎According to him, the Institution of Surveyors, Abia State Branch, will introduce a sustained cash award of ₦200,000 for the best graduating student of SEDT at each convocation, aimed at encouraging academic excellence.
‎
‎Responding, the Rector attributed the progress recorded by the institution to divine grace and the backing of the state government.
‎
‎“As God continues to guide us, alongside the support of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, who has elevated tertiary education, we will keep advancing the cause of humanity,” he stated.
‎
‎Okoro stressed the importance of hands-on training, noting that it sets polytechnic education apart from the university system.
‎
‎He directed that students be exposed more to fieldwork to complement classroom learning.
‎
‎“A lack of practical exposure makes students feel disadvantaged compared to their university counterparts. Polytechnic education is skill-driven, and no system is superior to the other,” he said.
‎
‎He urged students to embrace professionalism, beginning from their immediate environment, and directed that SEDT students commence lectures at the Osisioma Campus extension from April and assured that transportation arrangements would be put in place.
‎
‎The Rector also assured the institution will cover 50 per cent of their monthly dues to enhance effective representation.

The Rector of the Polytechnic, Prof. Christopher Okoro Kalu, approved the partnership on Wednesday while receiving the NDLEA State Coordinator, CN Chigbu Odomelam Chilee, and his delegation at the institution’s Council Chamber.

He disclosed that the training sessions would be held between May and June, with another round scheduled for November, and stressed the importance of continuous sensitisation.
