Practice Tip #7: Melody in the Middle
š¹ Your chords donāt always have to sit under the melody⦠sometimes the magic happens when the melody is tucked inside the chord. That smooth hidden texture in intros and outros? Thatās what gives music emotion, depth, and those āgoosebumpsā moments. š¶š„
Learn to voice your chords in a way that allows the melody to sing from within. Simple technique, powerful sound.
Keep practicing, keep listening, keep creating.
Rhythm is in you. š¹āØ

Practice Tip 5: Learn the Nashville Number System
Musicians⦠letās talk
If changing keys still stresses you out, it might be time to start thinking in numbers š¹
Because 1-4-5-6m works in every key.
Once you understand numbers, transitions become smoother, rehearsals become faster, and communication with other musicians becomes easier.

Practice Tip 4: Ear For Eye
The musicians getting called consistently are not always the flashiestā¦theyāre the ones who can listen, understand, and adapt quickly. š¹
Charts are helpful, but your ears should become your greatest tool. Train yourself to hear chord movements, melodies, transitions, and patterns.
Because music is more than whatās written, itās whatās understood.
Your growth changes the moment your ears become active. š¶

Practice Tip 3: Serve the song, not your fingers š¹
I used to think more notes meant better playing; faster runs, more fills, constant movement⦠it felt impressive. But then I realized something; when the music gets too crowded, the message gets lost.
If the singer is struggling to breathe because youāre overplaying, youāre not helping, youāre distracting.
Sometimes the most powerful thing you can play...is nothing. Because space isnāt empty, itās intentional.

Practice Tip 2: Weak Hand Isolation
Dedicate 10 minutes daily to left-hand exercises; scales, chords, and patterns. One of the fastest ways to improve your playing is simple:
Donāt neglect your weaker hand.
Sometimes the difference between average and excellenceā¦
is what you do with your weakness.
Balanced hands = better musicianship š¹

Today's Nugget #1: Relax your shoulders.
Drop the tension. Let the music breathe. Your speed isnāt just in your fingers, it starts from your posture š¹āØ
Tension is the silent enemy of great sound. When your shoulders are tight, your flow suffers and your tone feels heavy. But the moment you relax, everything changes; your movement, your speed, your expression.
Remember⦠Rhythm is in you. š«

Today's Nugget: Tune Your Drums
You can have the best chops, clean timing, and solid groove⦠but if your drums donāt sound right, it shows.
Tuning is not optional, itās part of your sound. Itās what gives your playing clarity, punch, and character. A well-tuned kit makes everything you play feel more confident and professional.
Donāt ignore it. Take time to understand your drums, adjust your tension, and find a sound that fits the music youāre playing.
Because at the end of the day, itās not just about how you play⦠itās about how you sound. š„š„

Today's Nugget: Listen More Than You Play
If you want to grow as a drummer, start by becoming a better listener. š§
Itās not always about how much you can play, itās about how well you understand whatās already happening in the music.
When you listen closely, your timing improves, your groove tightens, and your choices become more intentional.
Great drummers donāt just react, they connect. They hear every instrument, every space, every moment⦠and they play with purpose.
So today, challenge yourself: donāt rush to fill every gap. Sit in the groove, pay attention, and let your playing flow from what you hear.
The more you listen, the better you play. Simple. š„š„

Today's Nugget: Serve the Song
I used to think drumming was about doing the most; fast fills, big moments, showing everything I could do. It felt good in the moment, but something was always missing.
Then I started paying attention to the drummers who really stood out(which is a must do for every drummer who wants to improve) and it wasnāt because they played the most. It was because they played what the song actually needed. Nothing forced, nothing extra, just the right groove, in the right place, at the right time.
That shift changed everything for me. I realized itās not about showing off, itās about serving the song. Locking into a solid groove, keeping things steady, and letting the music breathe can be far more powerful than overplaying.
So today, focus on the groove first. Make it feel good, make it sit right. The fills and the chops will always have their place but the groove is what carries the song.
