I bet many Tech people does not know the difference between surface web, deep web and Dark web.
1. The surface web is the layer that most people use. It contains content that can be accessed using a web browser.
2. The deep web generally requires authorization to access it. An organization's intranet is an example of the deep web, since it can only be accessed by employees or others who have been granted access.
3. Lastly, the dark web can only be accessed by using special software. The dark web generally carries a negative connotation since it is the preferred web layer for criminals because of the secrecy that it provides.

Zero Trust security model:

Hello, today we are going to discuss Zero Trust Security model.
Without much ado, “Zero Trust" is an IT security model that assumes threats are present both inside and outside a network. Consequently, Zero Trust requires strict verification for every user and every device before authorizing them to access internal resources. Technically, this is a principle of trust no one including your CEO, colleagues, sweetheart, wife, husband within and outside the network.
More simply put: traditional IT network security which is based on castle-and-moat concept trusts anyone and anything inside the network. A Zero Trust architecture trusts no one and nothing.
Zero Trust security means that no one is trusted by default from inside or outside the network, and verification is required from everyone trying to gain access to resources on the network. This added layer of security has been shown to prevent data breaches
Studies have shown that the average cost of a single data breach is over $3 million. Considering that figure, it should come as no surprise that many organizations are now eager to adopt a Zero Trust security policy.

Main principles behind Zero Trust?
1. Continuous monitoring and validation: Here we implement logins and connections time out periodically, forcing users and devices to be continuously re-verified.
2. Least privilege: This involves careful managing of user’s permissions. This means giving users access on a need-to-know basis.
3. Device access control: This minimizes the attack surface of the network by ensuring that every device is authorized, and assess all devices to make sure they have not been compromised.
4. Microsegmentation: This is the practice of breaking up security perimeters into small zones to maintain separate access for separate parts of the network.

6. Multi-factor authentication (MFA): MFA means requiring more than one piece of evidence to authenticate a user e.g. 2FA
The primary benefit of applying Zero Trust principles is to help reduce an organization's attack surface. Additionally, Zero Trust minimizes the damage when an attack does occur by restricting the breach to one small area via microsegmentation, which also lowers the cost of recovery

Main Zero Trust best practices are?
a. Continuous monitoring of network traffic and connected devices
b. Apply the principle of least privilege for everyone in the organization
c. Keep devices updated: Vulnerabilities need to be patched as quickly as possible. Zero Trust networks should be able to restrict access to vulnerable devices.
d. Partition the network
e. Act as if the network perimeter did not exist
f. Stay up to date with the latest security trend
g. Use security keys for MFA
h. Avoid motivating end users to circumvent security measures

NOTE: Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) is the main technology that enables organizations to implement Zero Trust security.

Today we will be talking about The History of Cybersecurity:

A computer virus is malicious code written to interfere with computer operations and cause damage to data and software. The virus attaches itself to programs or documents on a computer, then spreads and infects one or more computers in a network. Today, viruses are more commonly referred to as malware, which is software designed to harm devices or networks. Two examples of early malware attacks that we'll cover are the Brain virus and the Morris worm.

In 1986, the Alvi brothers created the Brain virus, although the intention of the virus was to track illegal copies of medical software and prevent pirated licenses, what the virus actually did was unexpected. Once a person used a pirated copy of the software, the virus infects that computer.

In 1988, Robert Morris developed a program to assess the size of the internet. The program crawled the web and installed itself onto other computers to tally the number of computers that were connected to the internet. Sounds simple, right? The program, however, failed to keep track of the computers it had already compromised and continued to re-install itself until the computers ran out of memory and crashed. About 6,000 computers were affected, representing 10% of the internet at the time.
After the Morris worm, Computer Emergency Response Teams, known as CERTs®, were established to respond to computer security incidents. CERTs still exist today but as computer security incident response teams (CSIRTs) , but their place in the security industry has expanded to include more responsibilities.

Today, let’s dive into the world of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and Sensitive Personally Identifiable Information (SPII). 🛡️
🔍 PII refers to any data that, when used alone or combined with other relevant information, can identify an individual. Examples include:
• Full name
• Date of birth
• Physical address
• Phone number
• Email address
• Internet Protocol (IP) address

🔐 SPII, on the other hand, is a specific subset of PII that requires even stricter handling. It includes:
• Social Security Numbers (SSN)
• National Identity Numbers (NIN)
• Bank Verification Numbers (BVN)
• Medical or financial records
• Biometric data (like facial recognition)

🚨 Why is SPII so critical? If SPII falls into the wrong hands, it can lead to identity theft and cause significant harm to an individual.
