Knowing English is more than memorising grammar rules or getting good marks in an exam.

A child should be able to read, understand, speak and write clearly and most importantly, feel confident expressing their thoughts.

Sometimes, the difference between a struggling learner and a confident one is simply having the right guidance and consistent practice.

You’re at an event with your child, surrounded by people, and you suddenly want to tell them something you don’t want everyone else to understand.

You look at your child and say it in Igbo.

But your child looks at you like…
Mommy, what did you say?

That moment is funny, but it also says something important.

Sometimes, speaking our native language with our children gives us a special kind of connection.

It allows you to communicate naturally, share little jokes, correct them quietly, pass down family expressions and have those “this is just between us” moments.

But your child can only enjoy that connection if we actually teach them the language.

So yes, teach them English. Teach them other languages too.

But please, teach them yours.

Because one day, you may want to whisper something to your child in your language… and you don't want their response to be:

Mummy, please translate.

My learner joins class from Canada… and brings a new student with her.

Because of the time difference between Canada and Nigeria, this is a midnight class for me.

So there I was, trying my best to look awake and professional… when my learner suddenly showed me her new doll.

She introduced her as Charlotte.

At this point, I had questions:

Charlotte, are you joining the class too?

My learner: Yes, Teacher!

Me: Okay… but Charlotte better pay attention because I’m not teaching this lesson twice.” 😂😂

Now we had Teacher Blessing, my learner, and Charlotte in a midnight class!

Honestly, online teaching comes with unexpected classmates.

Today’s little achievement deserves a celebration!

My learner is learning to count from 1 to 10 in Igbo, and I’m so proud of the progress!

Learning a native language is more than memorising words. It helps children connect with their culture, communicate with family, and proudly carry their heritage wherever they go.

And yes… we are making Igbo learning fun, simple and interactive!

Today’s lesson with my Year 9 learner focused on understanding Animal Farm beyond the storyline.

A TRCN certificate should mean more than having a document in your file.

What does it really mean to be a professional teacher?

Is it simply about having a degree?
Is it about being able to explain a topic?
Or is it about the impact we make on the learners entrusted to us?

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) represents an important part of professionalising teaching in Nigeria. But professional registration should go beyond the certificate.

It should challenge us as teachers to ask ourselves:

📌 Am I still learning?
📌 Am I improving my teaching methods?
📌 Do I understand the individual needs of my learners?
📌 Do I assess not just what they know, but how well they understand?
📌 Am I maintaining the ethics and dignity of the teaching profession?

A teacher can have qualifications and still have room to grow.

Professionalism is not only what is written on your certificate; it is reflected in how you prepare, how you teach, how you treat learners, and how committed you are to their growth.

The teaching profession deserves people who are not only qualified, but competent, ethical, reflective and committed to continuous development.

To every teacher reading this:
Your qualification got you into the profession. Your continuous growth is what makes you better at it.

I just came out of an Igbo class, and I had to pause for a moment.

Sometimes, as a teacher, we get so focused on completing the lesson that we forget to appreciate the little victories happening right in front of us.

Today, I watched my learner make another great effort in her Igbo learning journey.

She may not know every word yet. She may still make mistakes. She may sometimes need a little help with pronunciation.

But she keeps trying.

And honestly, that is what makes me proud.
