Afcon 2025: So who is this Lumumba?
This man died a very painful death. His name is Patrice Lumumba. He was the first prime minister of the DRC. At the time, the DRC was called the Republic of the Congo. The “Democratic” part was added in 1964. The name Zaire was introduced in 1971 and was later removed by Kabila in 1997.
Lumumba ruled for less than 3 months, from June to September 1960, roughly 73 days. He was removed from power through a coup backed by Belgium and the USA. The man who carried out the coup was called Joseph-Désiré Mobutu, commonly known as Mobutu Sese Seko. He was the most powerful military officer at the time.
Remember, at this time Congo did not only have a prime minister, they also had a president. His name was Joseph Kasa-Vubu.
Before the coup, President Kasa-Vubu had actually tried to fire Lumumba because they were fighting for control, but Parliament still supported Lumumba. Mobutu then stepped in and said to hell with politicians. Kasa-Vubu was allowed to stay on as president but only as a weak figurehead with almost no power. Mobutu was the one running everything. He placed Lumumba under house arrest.
However, Lumumba escaped from house arrest, trying to go to another town called Stanleyville, where his supporters had set up a rival government loyal to him. But his movements were closely watched. He was captured on 1 December 1960 by Mobutu’s soldiers before reaching his destination.
They beat him badly. He was humiliated in public and paraded before cameras for the world to see. Yet the worst was still to come
After torturing him for weeks, they took him and surrendered him to a region called Katanga, which was led by a man named Moïse Tshombe. This man had declared independence from Congo. Politically, Katanga was no longer part of Congo. Naturally, Lumumba was against this; he saw Tshombe as an enemy of the state, and Tshombe saw Lumumba as a threat to his power.
It is worth noting that Belgian officers were actively involved in everything. The government of Belgium approved and facilitated all of this evil, including the brutal murder of Lumumba. They took turns on him, passing him around and torturing him. It is also worth noting that Lumumba was not alone; he had his colleagues who were caught together with him.
After they got tired of beating him, they tied him to a tree and shot him with a firing squad, killing him and ending a gruesome ordeal that had lasted over 40 days. Remember, Lumumba was captured on 1 December 1960 by soldiers loyal to Mobutu. They held him for 47 days under extremely harsh and degrading conditions. On 17 January 1961, they transferred him to Katanga, where his worst political enemies were in charge. That same night, after enduring further torture and abuse, Patrice Lumumba was killed. He was only 35.
Initially, they buried him in a shallow grave, but they feared that the grave would be discovered. They then dug him up the following day. They cut his body into pieces. They took those pieces and placed them in acid in order to completely destroy the evidence. Any remaining bones were burned, but a Belgian police officer named Gérard Soete kept one of Lumumba’s teeth as a trophy. The tooth was taken to Belgium and remained there for decades. It was returned to the DRC in 2022 by the Belgian state.
Lumumba’s death was officially announced weeks after his assassination. The government initially claimed that he was killed by villagers after escaping. It later reversed that statement and declared him a national hero.
Belgium formally apologized for its involvement in the murder of Lumumba in 2002.

🧠 Mental Health in Namibia.
A Practical Guide by Muyunda Staleny Mbwainga

What is Mental Health?
Mental health is about how we think, feel, and act. Good mental health = handling stress, studying/working well, and building healthy relationships.

⚠️ Common Symptoms
1. Persistent sadness or withdrawal
2. Loss of interest in daily activities
3. Big changes in sleep or appetite
4. Irritability, anger outbursts
5. Difficulty concentrating or poor school/work performance
6. Unexplained headaches/stomachaches
7. Talk of death or self-harm

🎯 Common Causes in Namibia
1. Poverty & unemployment
2. Stress of being the family breadwinner
3. Violence, trauma, or loss
4. Alcohol & substance abuse
5. Stigma & isolation
6. Biological/medical factors

🌍 What We Can Learn From Africa
Rwanda: After the genocide, Rwanda integrated mental health into every district hospital, trained nurses & community health workers, and used group therapies (sociotherapy) to rebuild social support.
Ethiopia: Scaled mental health through primary care clinics using WHO’s mhGAP. Training health workers, mentoring staff, and making essential medications available.

Lesson for Namibia: Mental health can be improved by community support + trained staff + reducing stigma.

✅ Coping & Support Tips
1. Talk to someone you trust.
2. Keep a routine (sleep, meals, movement).
3. Set small goals daily.
4. Use breathing/grounding (inhale 4s, hold 4s, exhale 4s).
5. Avoid alcohol & drugs.

Teachers: run quick check-ins, spot red flags, and refer learners early.

🚨 When to Seek Help Immediately
1. Suicidal thoughts or self-harm
2. Hearing voices or severe confusion
3. Inability to function (school/work/home)

📌 Quick Steps for Teachers & Leaders
1. Referral Map: List local clinics & contacts.
2. Mini-lesson: Teach learners self-check & breathing.
3. Staff Huddle: Agree on how to spot & refer cases.

💡 Mental health is not a luxury, it’s survival. Namibia can follow African models to build strong, community-based support systems.
