📘 What Are Stative Verbs?
Stative verbs (also called state verbs) describe a state, condition, or feeling rather than an action.
They usually refer to thoughts, emotions, relationships, senses, possession, or being.
These verbs are not normally used in continuous (-ing) forms because they describe something that simply is, not something that is happening.
🧠 Main Categories of Stative Verbs
1️⃣ Verbs of Emotion
👉 like, love, hate, prefer, want, need, dislike
🗣️ I love chocolate. (✅)
🚫 I’m loving chocolate. (❌ — unless informal or expressive, like in ads)
2️⃣ Verbs of Thought / Opinion
👉 know, believe, remember, forget, understand, think (opinion)
🗣️ I know the answer.
🚫 I’m knowing the answer.
3️⃣ Verbs of Possession
👉 have, own, belong, possess
🗣️ This car belongs to me.
🚫 This car is belonging to me.
4️⃣ Verbs of Senses / Perception
👉 see, hear, smell, taste, feel (when describing, not acting)
🗣️ That cake smells delicious!
🚫 That cake is smelling delicious!
5️⃣ Verbs of Being / Appearance
👉 be, seem, appear, look (when describing, not watching)
🗣️ You look tired today.
🚫 You’re looking tired today. (❌ unless temporary or informal)
💬 Quick Tip
Some verbs can be both stative and dynamic, but with different meanings!
👉 Think — I think you’re right (stative = opinion).
👉 I’m thinking about my holiday (dynamic = considering).
