🎓This week, we’re excited to welcome the newest members of our alumni community, starting with the Class of 2025 at AKA Dhaka!

Last week, Ziyaan Virji, a Class of 2020 alumnus returned to the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa to deliver his powerful Leaders of Today keynote, officially opening the IB Festival of Hope on campus.

This special event was part of Ziyaan’s Leaders of Today Speaking Tour, spanning 15+ cities across 5 countries, with the ambitious goal of inspiring 100,000 young people to launch their own leadership journeys.

In addition to his global speaking work, Ziyaan currently helps lead the Youth Strategy for the International Baccalaureate (IB) and played a key role in organizing the first-ever IB Festival of Hope in Africa, hosted right here at our Academy.

We are incredibly proud to see one of our alumni giving back to our community and inspiring the next generation of change makers.

A huge congratulations to Sakina Rashid on winning the King’s College London, European Law Student’s Association (KCL ELSA) Legal Essay Competition! 🎉

Her essay “Whipping Justice into Shape: A Debate on Corporal Punishment”, explored the ethical implications of the death penalty and its alternatives in relation to human rights principles.

Sakina, an alum of AKAM, is a first year law LLB student at King’s College London. In her first year, she has been involved in various projects and positions including being the first year representative for the KCL Bar & Mooting Society, being KCL Brand Ambassador and Communications Promotions Officer for LawTalkToday, is the Socities Liason of KCL SolidariTee, a non-profit organisation dedicated to raising funds for the legal fees of refugees needing aid and is co-hosting a legal podcast- ‘Legally Loud’. ⚖️

Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan V was named the 50th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, following the unsealing of the Will of his late father, Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV, who died in Lisbon, Portugal on 4 February 2025, aged 88.

Prince Rahim Aga Khan V is a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his progeny) through his daughter, Hazrat Bibi Fatima, and the Prophet’s cousin and son-in-law, Hazrat Ali, the fourth Rightly Guided Caliph of Islam and the first Shia Imam.

Throughout their 1,400 year history, the Ismailis have been led by a living, hereditary Imam. The Ismailis live in over 35 countries and number approximately 12 to 15 million.

His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), passed away peacefully in Lisbon on 4 February 2025, aged 88, surrounded by his family.

The announcement of his designated successor will follow.

Building on foundations laid by his grandfather Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah, during his lifetime, Aga Khan IV grew the Aga Khan Schools system to operate in 11 countries and educate almost 100,000 students every year. Each school aspires to deliver an inclusive, academically rigorous and well-rounded curriculum that honours the context in which students live, as well as their role as global citizens.

The staff and volunteers of the Aga Khan Schools offer our condolences to the family of His Highness and to the Ismaili community worldwide. As we honour the legacy of our patron, Prince Karim Aga Khan, we continue to work with our partners to improve the quality of life for individuals and communities across the world.

Meet Ryan Maina, a Class of 2022 alumna from the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, whose journey after graduation showcases leadership, service and excellence.

Now a third-year student at the Ivey Business School in Canada, Ryan has made notable strides in . He interned as an investment banking summer analyst at TD Securities in 2024 and is set to join Goldman Sachs in the same role next summer, advancing his expertise in capital markets.

During his classes at the Academy in Mombasa, Ryan developed an appreciation for the role of finance in driving economic and societal progress. He has carried this with him post-graduation and is a portfolio manager at Blackleaf Capital – a student-led investment club in Canada – where he empowers future leaders in finance by educating Black students about the industry and fostering .

With plans to build his career in North America, Ryan ultimately aims to return to to apply his skills toward economic growth and innovation. His journey highlights the power of education and commitment to impactful change.
