MORE THAN A TRIP: UUM GLOBAL STUDENTS CONCLUDE MEANINGFUL LANGKAWI JOURNEY
The three-day edutourism programme in Langkawi Island concluded on a memorable note as 65 inbound mobility and full-time international students from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) spent their final day appreciating one of the island’s most iconic landmarks, Dataran Lang (Eagle Square).
Known as a symbol of Langkawi, Dataran Lang also reflects the island’s name, believed to be derived from helang (eagle) and kawi (reddish-brown), referring to the eagle associated with the island. The visit gave participants a meaningful glimpse into the heritage and identity of Langkawi while allowing them to capture memorable moments against the stunning seaside backdrop.
Participants took the opportunity to enjoy the scenery, take group photos and spend time soaking in their final moments on the island before heading to the Kuah Ferry Terminal, where they explored, had quick bites and relaxed over coffee and conversations while waiting for the ferry back to Kuala Perlis.
For participant Nazwa Rahma Puspita, an exchange student from Universitas Mercu Buana, Indonesia, the trip was about much more than sightseeing.
“What we appreciated most was the chance to experience something new and explore Malaysia, especially Langkawi, with so much joy. Every moment throughout our time in Langkawi felt meaningful. We are especially grateful for the support from the Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC) and Global Buddies Club (GBC), who made the journey warm and comfortable,” she shared.
More than an island excursion, the programme enabled participants to better appreciate local culture, understand Langkawi’s tourism-driven economy, shared experiences and global friendship. As participants returned to UUM, they brought home not only souvenirs and photographs, but lasting memories and a deeper connection to Malaysia.
