We are a team of students participating in Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) 2026, a nationwide environmental programme organised by Toyota Malaysia in collaboration with the Ministry of Education ๐ŸŒ

13/06/2026

After 2 weeks of weighing food waste, conducting interviews and collecting surveys, we noticed that the plate waste recorded of total weight 48.9kg, much higher than the recorded 37.2kg weight of food preparation waste. This was further proven by our survey with 24.5% respondents admitting they often leave food unfinished. ๐Ÿ“Š The main causes of this happening are oversized meal portions with vegetables and rice being the most common among leftovers. ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

Nevertheless, we are grateful to the 20 Restaurant Millah patrons who agreed to be interviewed and to the 106 people who responded to our survey. ๐Ÿ™Œ Your unwavering support is what drives us to take the next step in our green mission. ๐Ÿƒ

These are some of the interviews that were done by our members in the BioLoop Carbon Innovators team! ๐ŸŽฅ

We asked a series of questions such as what type of food people usually order, why does food waste usually happen, and also asking why food waste is an environmental issue. ๐Ÿƒ

The interviewees gave a variety of answers that really shows how much the community really understands and concerns for the environmental issues regarding food waste. โ™ป๏ธ

In the end, most of them supported our project in helping to turn the environment into a better place. ๐ŸŒณ

And you should too! So please continue to support us in our journey to save the environment! ๐Ÿ€

Where does organic waste come from in Malaysia โ“

Did you know? Malaysia throws away around 17,000 tonnes of organic waste every day, where roughly 16,000 tonnes of organic waste are generated from households. ๐Ÿšฎ Household organic waste is also the largest contributor of organic waste in Malaysia, with it being 44.5% of all organic waste generated daily. ๐Ÿ

Other than that, Malaysia's wet markets are also where organic waste is mostly generated. ๐ŸŸ With its main source being vegetables, ๐Ÿฅฌ livestock, ๐Ÿฎ and fruits. ๐Ÿ‰

Understanding where organic waste in Malaysia comes from is essential for us civilians to be aware and take action together to control and manage the organic waste issues in Malaysia. โ™ป๏ธ

On the 20th April 2026, marked the beginning for our daily visit to Restaurant Millah for two weeks. We provided trash cans to separate two types of food waste, which is food preparation waste and plate waste. ๐Ÿฅ— Led by bioloop key members, our group of students recorded the weight of both types of food waste. ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

We likewise interviewed restaurant workers and customers to collect their view on food waste management. A QR code survey was also launched during the period. With these data, we hope to learn more about food waste management, opening pathways to how it can be improved. This made every visit to Restaurant Millah eye-opening, mouth-watering and heart-warming. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Why organic waste matters in Malaysia โ“

Malaysia generates 39,000 tonnes of waste daily and 45% are organic food wastes. ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ This amount of foods are enough to feed 4.4 millions of people ๐Ÿ‘ฅ. Improper management of organic wastes might lead to greenhouse gas emissions. ๐Ÿชด

Organic waste matters and causes negative effects to our planet. Hence, we should learn to handle and reduce them as much as possible. Small changes in how we treat these wastes will make a world of difference. โ™ป๏ธ

Hello everybody!๐Ÿ‘‹

On the 7th of April 2026, our team members from the BioLoop Carbon Innovators did on-site visits to several locations near our school. ๐Ÿซ We visited Restoran Millah, a bus station, and Varia Saloon. After evaluating with a matrix chart, we decided to put our focus on the organic waste in Restoran Millah. ๐Ÿ’š

After explaining our participation in the Toyota Eco Youth competition to the restaurant's staff, they agreed to collaborate with us and aid us in documenting the food waste in the kitchen to understand the situation better. โ™ป๏ธ

We hope this collaboration will help us a develop a more sustainable solution for managing food waste! ๐ŸŒฑ

What is PSM โ“

Problem Solving Methodology, short form PSM, is an 8-step method that is mainly used in Toyota Eco Youth (TEY). ๐Ÿ€

TEY focuses on resolving community environmental issues by applying Toyotaโ€™s structured 8-step Problem Solving Methodology.๐Ÿ’ก

Toyotaโ€™s PSM consists of the following 8 steps:
1) Identify & Select Problem โ“
2) Understand Current Situation ๐Ÿ’ก
3) Target Setting ๐ŸŽฏ
4) Root Cause Analysis ๐Ÿง
5) Draft Countermeasures ๐Ÿ“
6) Implement Countermeasures โœ…
7) Checking Result ๐Ÿ“Š
8) Standardize and Establish Control ๐ŸŒŸ

Not only TEY, but Toyotaโ€™s PSM can also be used to solve our own problems in our daily lives. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

With Toyotaโ€™s PSM, we believe we can use it to ensure our Toyota Eco Youth journey runs smoothly. โœจ
