This is a new tree produced by grafting an entire scion onto a rootstock. The scar is visible at the join where the two different colours of bark are seen. We do not produce many of our trees with this method, for one thing more material is required to produce each tree. The benefit of this method is that it can be done during the winter when budding isn’t possible.

A grafting method (pictured) is used to ensure reliability of an orchard. This involves taking a cutting (the scion) from a desirable parent tree which is then placed and grafted onto the the rootstock by lining up the cambium layers and wrapping with wax tape to allow the two to heal and become one prosperous cultivar.

Where do "Seedless" grapes come from?
"The correct answer is that the plants that grow them are actually clones. So instead of growing them from seeds, they're grown from cuttings taken from shiraz grapesexisting plants.

Obviously, the first seedless grapes were from a plant that arose through mutation - a genetic change - that meant that it didn't have seeds. And, presumably, some grower noticed this. He or she would have taken a little shoot or a stem off the plant, put it in the ground, and a new plant - genetically identical to the seedless parent - would have grown.

In fact, this is how a lot of plants are cultivated now, and also a lot of seedless varieties. But, this technique is causing problems in some cases. Bananas, because they're all clones, are getting struck down by fungi - like Panama disease.

And if a population is created by cloning, all of the plants are genetically identical, so they can very easily be wiped out because the plants have the same defences to a pathogen. And if the pathogen evolves to sumount this defence, every cloned plant is susceptible.."

Copied from Westcoast seeds -

organic tomato seeds produce the most extraordinary, currently available. The flavour of Indigo Rose organic tomatoes is clean and clear, reminiscent of plums, with a slightly acidic sweetness you’ll only find in home-grown tomatoes. Saladette fruits that average50 grams (1.7 oz.)

Developed by Jim Myers at the Oregon State University using traditional plant breeding techniques, Indigo Rose Organic tomato seeds are the first improved tomato variety in the world that has the powerful antioxidant anthocyanin in the fruit. Indigo Rose organic tomatoes hang in clusters from vigorous sprawling vines with wild, curly leaves. Plants are hardy and have good disease resistance.

Important tip! Indigo Rose fruit must be allowed to ripen fully for complete development of sugars and acids. It’s easy to harvest too early because the usual visual clues won’t be there.

Plants from Indigo Rose Organic tomato seeds start out green like other varieties, however as the fruit matures the skin will become purple where exposed to light and the fruit tends to have a purple crown. This is caused by the antioxidant anthocyanin reacting to the sun. Indigo Rose Organic tomatoes are ripe when their skin colour changes from a shiny blue-purple to a dull purple-brown. The fruit also softens similarly to regular tomatoes, and the bottom of the tomatoes will turn from green to red when ripe."

Grafting is a method of propagating plants in which the tissues of one plant are fused with the tissues of another plant. When grafting roses, one plant is usually selected because of its hardy, healthy roots, and the other, referred to as the "scion", is selected for its blossoms. The scion tissues contain the genes for the traits that the gardener hopes to duplicate as a result of the grafting process, such as color, hardiness, or fragrance. Grafting roses is not difficult, but it does often require patience and practice.
