Kolej Tunku Kurshiah (TKC) offers an extensive two- year pre-university International Baccaulaureate Diploma Programme.
The curriculum is made up of the DP core and six subject groups. Made up of the three required components, the DP core aims to broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills. The three core elements are:
Theory of knowledge (TOK): reflecting on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know. The extended essay (EE): an independent
, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper. Creativity, activity, service (CAS): completing a project related to those three concepts. Students are given an opportunity to design their own learning by choosing their own subjects. Students must choose one subject from each of the five groups (1 to 5), ensuring breadth of knowledge and understanding in their best language, additional language(s), the social sciences, the experimental sciences and mathematics. Students must also choose either an arts subject from group 6, or a second subject from groups 1 to 5. For example, a science based student can do two Sciences; or a linguistic student can choose a second foreign language. The subjects offered in TKC are as follows:
Group 1: Language & Literature: Malay A
Group 2: Language Acquisition: English B
Group 3: Individuals and Societies: Business management & History
Group 4: Sciences: Physics, Chemistry & Biology
Group 5: Mathematics :Mathematics Analysis and Approaches & Mathematics Application and Interpretation
Group 6: The Arts: Visual Arts
It is this comprehensive range of subjects that makes the Diploma Programme a demanding course of study designed to prepare students effectively for university entrance. Personal abilities and future goals usually determine a candidate’s curriculum, but the IB programme is structured to accommodate every motivated, sincere and serious student. In each of the academic areas, students have flexibility in making their choices. This means they can choose subjects that are of interest to them and that they may wish to study further at university.
