Distinguished Nigerian Students (UPM),
I bring you warm greetings from the Executive Council.
As promised in my initial address regarding the new administrative charges, the NaijaComm Excos, alongside our former Chairman (Mr. Aliyu Muhammad), paid an official courtesy and advocacy visit to the Nigeria High Commission in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, 12th February 2026.
The meeting was highly successful, and we deliberated extensively on several pertinent issues affecting our welfare.
Regarding the administrative charge, here are the official facts presented to us by the Embassy:
• It is a Federal Policy: The charge is a new Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) policy that applies to all Nigerian Embassies globally, not just in Malaysia.
• The Original Cost: The mandated FGN fee was actually meant to be $50 USD (RM 200). However, through the prior intervention of the Consular General in KL, it was successfully negotiated down to RM 130 for Nigerians in Malaysia.
• Our Advocacy: Despite this explanation, my team and I strongly appealed for the amount to be reduced by a further 50% per document, or totally waived for students.
• The Resolution: The Embassy clarified that adjusting the fee further is beyond their local capacity in Kuala Lumpur.
However, they have given us their word that they will engage the Federal Government on our behalf to push for a necessary reduction for students.
Next Steps:
We have officially registered our grievances. While we await the Embassy’s engagement with the FGN, we will continue to monitor the situation and collaborate with other student leaders (which I have communicated with some of them already) across Malaysia to keep this conversation alive.
Thank you for your patience and for trusting us to represent your voices.
Olaleye Olalekan Oluwabunmi
Chairman, NaijaComm UPM.
