Some journeys are measured not by distance, but by the lives they touch.

In 2018, during the Walailak University, Thailand–UPM Public Health Camp, we had the privilege of visiting Silent Teddies Bakery in Kuala Lumpur. At that time, the bakery was only in its first year of operation, a small dream built on a powerful vision: creating opportunities and empowerment for the deaf community.

Eight years later, in 2026, we returned.
This time, we brought along our second-year BSc of Environmental and Occupational Health students as part of the Future-Proof Boot Camp 2.0: Building Tough Minds for a Sustainable Future. As we stepped into the bakery once again, we were amazed by how much it had grown. What was once a young social enterprise had blossomed into a thriving example of resilience, inclusivity, and purpose.

Yet, despite its growth, one thing remained unchanged, the warmth of the people behind it.

They welcomed us with open arms and generous hearts. Our students had the opportunity to decorate their own cookies, enjoy delicious food prepared with care, and experience firsthand the unique environment that Silent Teddies has created. But beyond the activities and hospitality, the greatest lesson came from the story itself.

Silent Teddies Bakery is more than a bakery. It is a living testament to the power of social entrepreneurship. It demonstrates how businesses can create meaningful social impact while remaining sustainable. It reminds us that inclusion is not merely a concept, but a commitment to ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to learn, work, contribute, and thrive.

For our students, the visit was a powerful reflection. It encouraged them to appreciate the educational opportunities they have received and to recognize that success is not measured solely by profit or achievement, but by the positive difference we make in the lives of others.

Looking at the photographs from 2018 and 2026 side by side, we see more than the growth of a bakery. We see the growth of a vision, the strength of a community, and the impact that determination and compassion can have over time.
We left Silent Teddies Bakery with more than souvenirs and decorated cookies. We left with valuable lessons, renewed inspiration, and hearts filled with gratitude.

Thank you, Silent Teddies Bakery, for reminding us that sometimes the most meaningful voices are not heard, but felt.

Three days. Countless memories. Lifelong lessons.

When we first announced the Future-Proof Boot Camp 2.0: Building Tough Minds for a Sustainable Future, some students admitted they did not really want to join. Leaving the comfort of home, facing unfamiliar challenges, and spending days in a camp setting did not sound exciting to everyone.

But as the camp came to an end, something remarkable happened.

The same students who were counting down the days before the camp began were now wishing for just one more day together.

From our inspiring visit to Silent Teddies Bakery, hands-on Water Quality and Toxicology modules, outdoor challenge activities, alumni sharing sessions around the campfire, to the multidisciplinary Emergency Response Plan (ERP) challenge, every activity was carefully designed to build not only knowledge, but also resilience, leadership, critical thinking, and teamwork.

The camp was never about who ran the fastest, answered the most questions, or won the most challenges.

It was about discovering that success is sweeter when achieved together.

It was about learning to trust one another when the task seemed impossible.

It was about finding strength when you thought you had none left.

It was about realizing that friendship, teamwork, perseverance, and mutual support are often the most valuable lessons beyond the classroom.

As educators, there is no greater reward than witnessing students grow in confidence, step out of their comfort zones, and begin to see their potential as future Environmental and Occupational Health professionals.

A heartfelt thank you to all our sponsors, consultants, invited speakers, alumni, facilitators, and the dedicated JKPP team who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Your contributions transformed this camp from an idea into a meaningful experience that will remain in the hearts of our students for years to come.

Future-Proof Boot Camp 2.0 was more than a camp.

It was a journey of growth.
A journey of friendship.
A journey of resilience.

And perhaps, the beginning of many future success stories.
