我的使命
MY CALLING

我是一个教育工作者，上半辈子如斯，下半辈子亦如斯，一生以栽培人才为己任。

我参与马来西亚的高等教育是因为我要为马来西亚培养可以立足国际的高级人才。

十年前，我收购了一家规模不大但素质很高的学院，并把它命名为ERICAN COLLEGE。

就此，立肯正式进入高教界！

我决心要办一所与众不同的大专学府，一所不但让学生在他们的专业有出色表现，而且在“做人做事”方面也有所掌握的学院。

于是，我写了一本书，取名为YES YOU CAN，里面详细的阐述了我对年轻人“做人做事”的一百个想法和要求，并把它纳入教育体系，作为每一个学生的必修课。

我深信言教不如身教，要学生掌握如何做人，那就一定得让他们从教育者身上感受到这种素质，以便他们可以从一开始借镜，进而模仿，然后领悟，最后活出一个真正属于他们自己的成功人生态度和精神。

因此，我亲力亲为传授“成功之道”给学生，从不假手于人。我可以为他们三天三夜不眠不休，喊到喉咙沙哑，讲不出话来，也可以无论在天涯海角都飞回来与他们相聚，为他们讲课。

我要求我每一个学生都明白“做人”的道理，进而成为“做事”的高手，最终成为市场炙手可热的人才，国家的栋梁。

十年了眨眼过去，我们成功的为马来西亚培养了数以千计的可用之才。

我最欣慰的就是我们的毕业生在各领域都有出色的表现，更感动的是许多毕业生会不时联系我，向我报告他们的近况。

上个星期，有个学生：Papa，老板说我表现最好，升职咯！

我开怀大笑！

噢是的。。。有些学生叫我Papa，因为他们说我是他们的Papa Erican。

昨天，有个三年前毕业的学生说：老师，我和几个同学开了一家公司，做得还不错！

我点头赞许。

今天一大早，有个刚毕业的学生说：拿督，我拿到了某某知名大学的奖学金，直接进入了第二年！

我很安慰，不是因为我渴望学生对我的感激，而是因为我知道我们的教育方式是成功的。

我们的办学受到肯定，立肯学院获马来西亚高教部MYQUEST颁发五星级学院认证。我们还连续四年（2016, 2017, 2018, 2019）荣获马来西亚私人教育公会NAPEI《马来西亚最佳中型学院》大奖。

然而，对我而言，金杯银杯不如口碑。接着下来，我会带领全体ERICAN的团队，继续努力，为马来西亚栽培更多优秀的人才，为让马来西亚在世界地图占一席之位作出小小贡献。

这，就是我的使命。

MY CALLING

I’m an educator. I have been for the past 30 years; I shall be for the next 30 years. Educating the next generation is what I’ve always felt destined to do.

I got involved in the higher education sector because I believed I could contribute in helping Malaysia to build quality human capital.

Ten years ago, I acquired a small yet high quality college, and renamed it as ERICAN COLLEGE.

Since then, Erican has been actively involved in the tertiary education sector.

I was determined not be an ‘also-run’; rather, I wanted to create a college which would be totally differentiated – I wanted our students to not just attain the top expertise in their chosen fields, I also wanted them to master the art of living successful lives by being successful humans.

Therefore, I wrote a book for young people and I called it 'YES, YOU CAN!'. This book explains my education philosophy and suggests how young people should approach life in 100 chapters. This has been incorporated into the curriculum and it is compulsory for all Erican students prior to graduation.

I believe that in order to teach students how to become better human beings, the teacher must live it and manifest the essence of it. This way students will be able to go through the important learning process of seeing, feeling, emulating, digesting, understanding, and eventually, mastery.

Therefore, I have taken it upon myself to teach this to our students personally. I can go to the extent of ‘shouting and yelling’ with them for 3 days and 3 nights until my voice is totally gone - just to make them ‘see’ my passion, and I can also fly back to Malaysia from wherever I am in the world to spend time with them - just to make them ‘feel’ my sincerity.

I insist that all of my students truly understand the meaning of life and how to become good human beings. I think this is fundamental to them developing abilities which will enable them to become human capital much sought after by the market and much needed for the development of our country.

And in the blink of an eye, ten years have passed. I’m grateful that we’ve successfully churned out thousands of graduates who now shine in many different industries and are important human assets for Malaysia.

Many of our graduates still contact me every now and then, and update me on their ‘latest’ status.

Last week, a student sent me a message: “Papa, I just got a promotion. My boss says I’m the best!”

I laughed a hearty laugh.

Oh, by the way…some students do call me ‘Papa’. They consider me their ‘papa’ in Erican.

Yesterday, yet another student texted me: “Datuk Eric, I started a company with a few of my classmates and we’re doing quite okay!”

I nodded to myself and said to him, ‘Well done!’

Early this morning, I received news from a recently graduated student that he had just secured a scholarship from a good university to enter into the second year of the degree programme.

These are great moments for me as an educator – not because I thirst for words of appreciation from our students – but due to the fact that I know we’ve done the right things for them.

And it's because we’ve delivered quality education, we’re privileged to have received a 5-Star certification from MyQuest, Ministry of Higher Education. We’ve also won ‘Best Mid-Sized College in Malaysia’ 4 years in a row, from 2016 to 2019.

So what’s next?

I’m determined to lead my Erican team to continue our quest for education excellence, and together, we strive to develop internationally competitive human capital for our country.

And this, my friends, is my true calling in life.
