Don't miss it!
Online Launch of Niná Boboi & Portugues Malaka: A Heritage Language in Mulitlingual Malacca
Niná Boboi is a lullaby which is sung in Malacca Portuguese (Papiá Cristang), Tugu Portuguese and Bahasa Indonesia (Nina Bobo).
Both books have been produced with input from the Malacca Portuguese-Eurasian Association, Tropa Di Santa Maria, the Faculty of Languages & Linguistics at Universiti Malaya, with advice from Professor Emerita Dr. Leslie Barratt (Indiana State University) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmar Mahboob (University of Sydney). All the members of the team were inspired to produce this book because we believe that both younger and older members of the community must lead efforts to keep the language alive.
The children's book, Niná Boboi, is trilingual in Malacca Portuguese Malay and English. The beautiful illustrations are by some of the children from Tropa di Santa Maria, a cultural dance group led by one of the books’ contributors, Sara Frederica Santa Maria.
The second book contains cultural and linguistic descriptions of the Malacca Portuguese language. It also contains a glossary of the words used in the Niná Boboi song, with English and Malay translations.
These books are edited by Professor Dr. Stefanie Shamila Pillai from the Faculty of Languages & Lingustics, Universiti Malaya. She is currently the Dean of the Social Advancement & Happiness Research Cluster at Universiti Malaya.
This online book launch is hosted by the Faculty of Languages & Linguistics with the support of UM’s Cultural & Heritage Research Centre.
