PPSK–HPUSM MEDICAL RADIATION PROTECTION OFFICER CERTIFICATION BECOMES LEADING CHOICE FOR PUBLIC AND PRIVATE HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS

MALAYSIA, 2 August 2026 — The Medical Radiation Protection Officer Training Unit at the School of Health Sciences (PPSK), in collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia Specialist Hospital (HPUSM), Health Campus, has successfully conducted the 4th iteration of its Radiation Protection Officer (Medical) [RPO(M)] Certification Training Course.

The intensive three-day program (2–4 August 2026) brought together 37 healthcare professionals, including medical physicists, radiologists, dental specialists, medical officers, and radiographers appointed as RPOs across various public and private institutions.

Participating institutions included University of Malaya Medical Centre, Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre@IIUM, Cengild G.I. Medical Centre, Gleneagles Hospital Sabah, UCSI Hospital, government general hospitals, and primary care clinics. Notably, this cohort also included international delegates from Icon Cancer Centre Singapore—themselves alumni of PPSK.

A key highlight of the program was an operational technical visit to HPUSM’s Department of Radiology. The visit offered delegates direct exposure to state-of-the-art diagnostic radiation modalities, including CT, fluoroscopy, MRI, and mammography systems. Engaging directly with clinical specialists enabled participants to seamlessly bridge core theoretical concepts with advanced clinical applications.

The Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) mandates this training for all licensed RPOs prior to formal competency certification, pursuant to the Atomic Energy Licensing Act for medical purposes (Act 304) and the MOH directive of 20 August 2025. To date, the PPSK–HPUSM Training Unit has certified over 150 of the more than 7,000 MOH-licensed medical RPOs nationwide.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prof. Dr. Wan Rosli Wan Ishak, Dean of the School of Health Sciences and primary training center license holder, noted that PPSK and HPUSM secured Class H accreditation in December 2024, establishing the facility as Malaysia’s premier certified RPO(M) training hub. He commended the interdisciplinary collaboration among PPSK’s Medical Radiation Program, HPUSM’s Department of Nuclear Medicine, Radiotherapy & Oncology, Department of Radiology, Transfusion Medicine Unit, and the Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Cancer Centre (PKTAAB), whose concerted efforts since 2023 were instrumental in achieving full accreditation.

Prof. Dr. Wan Rosli emphasized that this strategic synergy between academic faculty and clinical departments directly supports national healthcare initiatives, ensuring optimal radiation safety for both patients and medical staff across health networks. He added that the initiatives enhance USM’s global standing as a center of excellence in radiation safety across radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, diagnostic imaging, and cancer brachytherapy, while driving sustainable institutional growth through high-value technical consultancy.

✨ Successfully Concluded: RPO (Medical) Course Series 1 (Northern Zone) ✨

The Radiation Protection Officer (Medical) Unit—a collaboration between PPSK, PKTAAB, and HPUSM—successfully extended its RPO (Medical) training course to the Northern Zone!

Alhamdulillah, the RPO (Medical) Series 1 Northern Zone took place smoothly on 6 June 2019 at the Purest Hotel, Sungai Petani, Kedah. The event gathered 31 dedicated participants and AJKs, including Dentists, Medical Doctors, Radiographers, and committee members from the Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Cancer Centre (PKTAAB) USM, the School of Health Sciences (PPSK) USM, and USM Specialist Hospital (HPUSM). This specific session focused on Category 3 (Low Risk: General X-rays, IO, OPG, CBCT, and Mammography).

📖 Event Highlights & Distinguished Speakers:
• Opening Ceremony: Graced by Emeritus Professor Dato’ Dr. Abdul Aziz Tajuddin (PKTAAB USM Bertam), a national committee member for the RPO (Medical) Programme.

• Session 1: An insightful 2-hour presentation on "Introduction to the Requirements of Act 304 and its Subsidiary Regulations" by Mr. Arif Farhan Abdul Rani, Senior Assistant Director of the Medical Radiation Surveillance Branch, Kedah State Health Department (JKN Kedah).

• Session 2: Emeritus Professor Dato’ Dr. Abdul Aziz Tajuddin returned to deliver a 1-hour lecture on "Radiation Safety in Medicine".

• Afternoon Sessions: Focus shifted to modality-specific safety:
o Part I (General X-rays / Veterinary Medicine): Led by Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Zahri Abdul Aziz (PKTAAB, USM Bertam).

o Part II (IO / OPG / CBCT and Mammography): Led by Associate Professor Dr. Noor Diyana Osman (PKTAAB, USM Bertam).

• Final Session: Associate Professor Dr. Noor Diyana Osman concluded the lectures with a crucial briefing on "Planning & Emergency Procedures for Category 3".

🎓 Closing & Certification: The intensive 1-day, 6-hour course—fully aligned with the requirements set by the Medical Radiation Surveillance Division (MRSD), Ministry of Health Malaysia (MoH)—wrapped up at 5:00 PM.

The closing ceremony and certificate presentation were officiated by Associate Professor Dr. Mohammad Khairul Azhar Abdul Razab, Head of the USM Radiation Protection Officer (Medical) Training Unit, School of Health Sciences, USM Kubang Kerian.
