WSDN 2026 brings together global experts, practitioners and anyone interested in disaster management

18/02/2026

Floods are among the most frequent and devastating extreme events โ€” responsible for 44% of disasters between 2000 and 2019, affecting 1.6 billion people and causing $650 billion in losses.

What makes floods particularly complex is their systemic nature:
๐Ÿ”น Climate change intensifies rainfall, snowmelt, and sea-level rise
๐Ÿ”น Rapid urbanisation seals land and overloads drainage
๐Ÿ”น Deforestation, soil degradation, and river straightening amplify runoff
๐Ÿ”น Marginalised groups remain the most exposed

Floods come in three forms โ€” fluvial (river), pluvial (rainfall), and coastal โ€” and each requires tailored approaches. But all demand integrated flood management that combines:
โœ… Effective governance and early warning systems
โœ… Technological innovation, adapted to local realities
โœ… Social resilience and traditional knowledge
โœ… Nature-based solutions, from mangroves to wetlands

The evidence is clear: piecemeal fixes wonโ€™t suffice. Building resilience to floods requires investment in holistic, inclusive, and locally led strategies.

Meet Dr Nurulโ€™Ain Ahayalimudin ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ, the first and only Malaysian member of the World Society of Disaster Nursing.

In lecture halls at the International Islamic University Malaysia, she teaches future nurses about something many hope they will never face โ€” disasters.

But for Dr Nurulโ€™Ain, preparedness is not optional. It is responsibility.

As the sole national member of WSDN, she has quietly placed Malaysia on the global disaster nursing map. Her work is pushing for stronger systems, better training, and nurses who are ready when communities need them most.

This year, she steps forward as Conference Chair of WSDN 2026. Dr Nurulโ€™Ain will also be speaking at WSDN 2026, 17โ€“19 Sept, sharing insights and advocating the future of disaster nursing.

Artificial intelligence could transform disaster risk reduction and climate action. ๐Ÿ’ก

Machine learning technologies can enhance early warning systems, optimize energy efficiency and food production โ€” but not without risks.

We need to find ways to ensure such innovations benefit those who need it most, and this means overcoming the digital divide and data bias.๐Ÿš€

Meet Prof. Dr Sonoe Mashino from Kobe, Japan. ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต

In Japan, disasters are part of life. When earthquakes strike and communities are displaced, nurses are often the first comforting presence people see.

For years, Dr Mashino has stood in that space between chaos and care. For her, disaster nursing is not only about emergency response. It is about preparing communities, supporting recovery, and protecting dignity when it matters most.

This September, she brings those stories and lessons to Kuching. Dr Sonoe Mashino will be speaking at WSDN 2026.

Come listen to the voice behind the response, and the human side of disaster nursing. ๐ŸŽซ Book your conference tickets at https://wsdn2026.com/.
