Gandhāra Art represents one of the most important turning points in Buddhist visual history. Emerging from the northwest of the Indian subcontinent, Gandhāra became a unique crossroads of civilisations, where Indian Buddhist thought encountered Hellenistic, Persian, and Central Asian artistic traditions. It was here that the earliest anthropomorphic images of the Buddha were formed, laying the foundation for later Buddhist art across Asia.
The talk will be delivered by Dr Leow Chai-Yee, a recognised specialist in Gandhāran Buddhist art. She obtained PhD from Peking University and completed her postdoctoral research at Harvard University. She is currently appointed as Associate Research Fellow in Harvard University. Dr Leow’s research combines art history, archaeology, and Buddhist studies, offering a rigorous yet accessible perspective on Gandhāra as both the cradle of Buddhist art and a meeting point of ancient civilisations.

This training session was not about asking teachers to change immediately, nor about imposing a fixed teaching method. Instead, it began with teachers’ real classroom experiences. Prior to the session, I collected feedback through a Google Form and designed the training in direct response to their concerns. The session explored a central question:—— Teaching is not merely about covering content, but about helping students learn how to think and exercise judgement.
The training focused on three key directions:
🔹 The nature of teaching
Many classroom challenges are, in fact, rooted in instructional design rather than in students themselves.
🔹 From answers to thinking
Through questioning, evidence, discussion, and reflection, students can be guided to understand how answers are formed, rather than simply identifying the “correct” answer.
🔹 AI as an assistant, not the protagonist
AI can support lesson preparation and activity design, but teachers’ professional judgement and value guidance remain irreplaceable.
After the session, participant feedback was collected. Many teachers shared that the training helped them realise that:
1. AI can be a valuable assistant, but teachers must learn not only how to use it, but also how to evaluate and judge the information it provides, and use it to support thinking.
2. Language learning is fundamentally about expression and communication, including cultural meaning and values. Overemphasis on grammar can discourage learners.
3. Educators should reflect on deeper questions such as: *What kind of person do we want students to become? What does it mean to live well?* This points to the importance of whole-person education.
4. Classroom issues such as discipline problems, low motivation, or limited ability are not fixed. When learning is designed to engage students in thinking and participation, many of these challenges can be addressed.
5. Change does not need to happen immediately. Beginning with changes in ourselves, and positively influencing even one student, parent, or fellow educator, is already meaningful.
6. The transmission of Chinese education should not rely solely on rote memorisation of classical texts, model essays, or rigid examinations based on standard answers.
During the session, I also posed an open question to teachers: ”What is one small change you plan to try in the coming month?” Their main responses included:
* using AI to support lesson preparation
* adjusting questioning strategies
* increasing classroom interaction
* cultivating students’ independent and critical thinking
This training session also forms part of the Faculty of Education’s ongoing commitment to professional outreach and educational dialogue with schools. Educational change may not be immediate, but beginning with one lesson and one question already matters.
Thank you to for valuing teachers’ professional growth.
lies in continuous reflection and purposeful progress.

I was invited to deliver a keynote speech yesterday (25/10/2025) at the 2025 Chinese Education Summit (华教高峰会议), jointly organized by D**g Zong (董总), Jiao Zong (教总), Merdeka Education Centre (独大), and 27 other national Chinese organizations. My keynote title: “From Preservation to Innovation: Setting the Future Direction of Chinese Education Beyond 2025”
The event was reported in Sin Chew Daily today:
https://www.sinchew.com.my/?p=6974116
(KL, Oct 25) – Dean of the Faculty of Education at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Dr. Wong Sien Biang, stated that the future development of Chinese education in Malaysia must shift from passive reaction to proactive design, positioning itself as an innovative partner in national education.
"By planning wisely with a clear blueprint, taking teachers as the foundation, culture as the soul, and technology as the wings, Chinese education will be able to continue contributing to Malaysia’s diversity and sustainable development beyond 2025,” he said.
He emphasized that, in the face of national education reform and global educational transformation, Chinese education should not fall into a defensive position, but instead integrate confidently and rationally into the national education framework.
He urged the Chinese community to actively participate in the discussion and formulation of national education policies, so that Chinese education can truly become a constructive part of Malaysia’s education ecosystem.
Blueprint for Chinese Education: Three Core Goals
Dr. Wong proposed that the Chinese community should work together to formulate a "Smart Chinese Education Blueprint (2025 and Beyond)” under the national education vision to chart a clear long-term direction.
He suggested that the blueprint focus on three main goals:
1. Enhancing learning quality and teaching effectiveness through AI and digital technology;
2. Strengthening teachers’ professional development as the core of education;
3. Promoting educational innovation through multilingualism and cultural diversity.
He added that, in facing the challenges of the AI era and global educational transformation, Chinese education must take educational quality and cultural value as its foundation, guided by artificial intelligence and multilingual ecology, and bridged by rationality and inclusiveness — to move from ideals to practice, and to build a sustainable and forward-looking education system.
Malaysia’s Multilingual Environment as an Advantage
Dr. Wong highlighted that Chinese education, in redefining its position in the new era, should take educational quality and cultural value as its foundation, while being guided by AI and multilingual ecology.
He noted that Malaysia’s multilingual environment is a long-accumulated social resource, and in the AI era, it serves as a valuable data and cultural asset — even a key component of national competitiveness.
“Safeguarding Malaysia’s multilingual ecology is not only a responsibility of cultural preservation, but also a mission for continuous innovation in the age of artificial intelligence,” he said.
Dr. Wong concluded that while policy provides the framework, the future direction depends on the community’s foresight and action.
“History shows that every crisis brings with it the seed of renewal.
Chinese education has survived and grown because the Chinese community has demonstrated wisdom through persistence and dialogue — building resilience between preservation and adaptation.”
