Recently, I went for a job interview where I wanted to showcase my Malay speaking skills. My intention was to be upfront: even if I can hold a basic Malay conversation, I still need to study more in order to speak confidently on certain topics. This is an area I am continuously developing.
In English, my sentence would be:
"I need to mingle more."
However, what I actually said was: "Saya perlu BERGURAU lebih banyak." which means I need to JOKE more.
The correct Malay word should have been BERGAUL - to mingle or socialize.
The interviewers, the owner and the operational director, laughed because they thought I was just trying to be funny. Humor, after all, can be another way of learning a language more deeply.
In reality, I made a genuine mistake.
Nevertheless, I was hired because of that funny moment.
Still, I cringe every time I remember it.
