Every term our teachers choose a ‘painting of the term’, an artwork from the term that has stood out to them for various reasons. Today we look at our art teacher Jordans painting of the term, created by 13 year old Mathew Mcleish. He says,

‘Apart from being a stunning painting, from the vibrant colours, the prominent brush strokes to the fantastic use of light and shade. This painting represents a huge progress in Mathew's abilities as an artist. It was his first painting completed by himself, a proud moment for myself and especially his mum. His confidence and concentration is an inspiration and a fine example of the core values within the art school.’

This Modigliani art project asks students to divide a narrow sheet of paper into four equal sections, and then follow a formula to draw an extra tall head, neck and shoulders.

Modigliani was known for his elongated portraits, so this is kind of having fun with that idea, and also guarantees some very creative self portrait results.

PRO TIP: Use black construction paper, and have students trace their drawing in black again, when they are done, for an extra bold look.
