Sometimes, I stop students in the middle of their answer.

Not because they’re bad at Chemistry.
Not because they’re “wrong”.

I stop them because I can already see where the marks are about to be lost.

In exams, it’s very common for students to:

-> answer the topic instead of the question
-> miss the command word
-> explain correctly, but not in the way the examiner marks

If I let them finish the answer, they often feel like they understood it.
But exams don’t reward understanding alone. Rather, they reward precision.

So I interrupt early.

Because it’s easier to fix the thinking before it turns into a habit.
And it’s safer to correct direction midway than after the paper is marked.

It’s not about being strict.
It’s about protecting marks where they’re most easily lost.

I rarely, if ever, ask my students to memorise.
No, not even “perfect” answers.

The reason is simple.

Memorisation trains students to recognise patterns (which isn’t entirely bad), but it does very little to train thinking.

So when a question is changed even slightly from the norm, panic sets in. They feel like they’ve “never seen this before”.

Here’s the thing.

Exams don’t really test memory.
They test understanding under pressure.

And the biggest pressure students underestimate is time.

45 minutes for 40 objective questions feels generous (and it is)
until a student has to stop and figure out what the question is actually asking.

That’s where memorisation breaks down.

Active study is different.

It requires students to read, understand, explain, apply, and test ideas.
Merely repeating words doesn’t help.

For Chemistry and Physics in particular,
a student who understands why a formula works
can still solve the question even when the numbers or context change.

This is the standard I train my students to reach.

Most students work hard… yet still miss the marks they aim for.
This isn’t a motivation issue. It’s a methodology gap.

Many students revise by recognition rather than ex*****on. They understand the concepts, but when the question changes form, they freeze. This is why studying feels endless and why results stay inconsistent.

I teach using a Structured Learning System: A loop of Practice → Correction → Application. Students don’t just study the syllabus, instead they learn to think the way examiners think. This is why significant improvement usually appears within 4 to 5 lessons.

Classes are intentionally kept small to maintain precision and individual attention.
