Congratulations to our biotechnologist, Dr Nurashikin Suhaili, and her team comprising Dr Nurfaezzah Amat Jaafar, AP Dr Dayang Salwani Awang Adeni, Prof Dr Awang Ahmad Sallehin Awang Husaini, Easterina Empina, Dayang Norilyana Syafiqah, and Asfa Ahmad on winning a gold medal at the 37th International Invention, Innovation, Technology Competition & Exhibition (ITEX) 2026 with their project titled Next-Gen FermentCraft Toolkit.

Another gold medal was also secured by FRST member Ts. Dr Bernard Maringgal from the Agrotechnology programme and his team through their innovation, Durian Tree Crown Data Acquisition and Processing Using UAV-Based Remote Sensing.

Overall, UNIMAS achieved an impressive accomplishment at ITEX 2026, bringing home a total of 6 gold and 2 silver awards.

Congratulations to our undergraduates: Chong Lok Ye, Esther Chan Yin Hei, Ling Teck Fong and Evangeline Daphne Anak Davis on winning a Gold Medal at the International Biotechnology Competition and Exhibition 2026 (IBCEx’26) held at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with their innovative project, “Musaplast: Development of a Sustainable Antibacterial Biomaterial from Banana (Musa spp.) Peel Extract and Chitosan”.

Sincere appreciation is extended to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Micky Vincent and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Devagi Kanakaraju for their guidance and mentorship in nurturing these young talents. Appreciation is also extended to Mr. Abraham Chor, Miss Sonia Estefanny, and Mr. Danielson Ngor for their valuable assistance as advisors to the student team.

The faculty would also like to express our heartfelt appreciation to YBhg. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Al-Khalid Othman, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs and Alumni, and Dr. Edris bin Aden, Director of the Centre for Student Development, for their continuous support and encouragement towards student development, innovation, and excellence.

Congratulations to Dr Rosmawati Saat on the appointment as the Faculty Industrial Training Coordinator.

The Biotechnology Programme of FRST UNIMAS recently conducted a benchmark visit to the Biotechnology Programme at Faculty of Science and Technology, Universiti Malaysia Sabah. The delegation was led by the Dean, Prof Ts. Dr Faisal Ali Anwarali Khan and joined by the Deputy Dean (HEPA) Dr Mohd Zacaery, Deputy Dean (Postgraduate) Dr Nurashikin, Biotechnology Programme Coordinator Dr Simon Ngieng Ngui Sing, as well as fellow programme coordinators and members from FRST.

The visit served as a valuable platform to exchange ideas, share best practices and discuss potential academic and research collaborations between the two biotechnology programmes within Malaysia’s Borneo institutions.
