We had such a fulfilling event yesterday in conjuction with UrbanAqua-UM workshop 2023 in Ladang Mini ISB, Universiti Malaya. This is the first physical workshop that was conducted after several series of webinar before.

Various participants from different backgrounds particularly UM students, staff and farmers joined this workshop. Three informative lectures were given by Dr Pearl from Hellas Technology Farm, Dr Hafiza and Dr Hidayah Taufek.

The workshop were demonstrated by our postgraduate students who are doing research in their respective field particularly in aqua nutrition, BSF culture, biosafety and biosecurity (E-DNA and fish dissection).

Thanks to the organising committee particularly our students for managing the event. We will not be gathering yesterday without them.

To all the participants who joined us yesterday in Universiti Malaya, we hope you gained something from the workshop. It was our pleasure to host the event and we hope that you can join our next programme in the future ๐Ÿค—.

Post-seminar UrbanAqua @ UM Seminar Series 04/2023

As a valued sector providing food security and driving economic growth, climate change's effects on the aquaculture sector should not be ignored!

Shifts in geographic range, changes in fish migration patterns, habitat loss, and disruptions to ecological interactions are the perfect recipes for disaster as these foster invasive alien species (IAS) in the local water bodies.

To address IAS issues, Prof. Subha Bhassu introduced a novel method using environmental DNA (eDNA) as a biomonitoring tool for assessing and conserving biodiversity.

The benefits of using eDNA were outlined, including reduced costs, non-invasive sampling, elimination of needless animal sacrifice, efficiency, and the ability to conduct large-scale surveys with minimal effort.

Briefly, the LAMP assay makes it possible to detect the presence of IAS in water bodies in Malaysia by observing the colour change reaction. With the advancement of such an assay, citizen science can participate in this effortless water sampling.

Envisioning a future where citizen science is collectively united to enforce better environment management, Prof. Subha is actively exposing the eDNA sampling method to the youngster as early as the school stage as well as the general public in addition to awareness tools and initiatives being developed to educate people about IAS's impact on local fish populations.

Post-seminar UrbanAqua @ UM Seminar Series 04/2023

In her talk, Dr. Pearl gave a basic overview of different aquaculture systems depending on the intensity of culture, the water source, and the system's structure.

In terms of intensity, the aquaculture system can be characterized into extensive, semi-intensive, and intensive types of culture.

Before venturing into aquaculture, several aspects must be taken into account by the start-ups. One of the most important is sustaining a stable and safe water source throughout the system operation.

Dr. Pearl introduced the standard aquaculture systems such as the ponds, cages, raceways/flowthrough, and recirculating system, which have costs and benefits regarding price, water quality, disease control, waste management, and environmental impact.

Dr. Pearl believes successful farming is the holistic approach concerning the culture system and the farm management practice, biosecurity, fry quality, and sustainable farming concept.

Her last remark was that it is a community effort to make aquaculture sustainable for the wild and the environment.
