Early Pregnancy Precautions ๐Ÿคฐ๐Ÿป

The first two to three months of pregnancy are a critical period for embryo development and the most susceptible to miscarriages. Therefore, paying attention to precautions during the early stages of pregnancy is extremely important!!!

Here are some precautions for pregnant women during the early stages:
๐Ÿ“Œ 1. Limit Sexual Activity ๐Ÿ˜ณ
Intimate relations between couples are a normal part of married life. However, once the wife becomes pregnant, how to approach sexual activity becomes a matter of high concern. To ensure the baby's health, sexual in*******se should be avoided during the first three months of pregnancy.

๐Ÿ“Œ 2. Seek Medical Attention for These Conditions ๐Ÿ˜ฏ
For pregnant women, ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage are the most dangerous concerns during the early stages. Both situations can lead to abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding. Therefore, if a pregnant woman experiences abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding, seeking medical attention promptly is necessary.

๐Ÿ“Œ 3. Supplement Folic Acid to Prevent Fetal Deformities ๐Ÿฅฆ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŠ
The first three months of pregnancy are a crucial period for the development of the fetal neural tube. Expectant mothers should avoid adverse factors like smoking, alcohol, harmful chemicals, recently renovated houses, and poorly ventilated environments. Strengthening immunity and avoiding viral infections are also important, and self-medication should be avoided.

To prevent fetal deformities, pregnant women should start taking folic acid from the early stages of pregnancy (preferably even before conception). Foods rich in folic acid include amaranth leaves, spinach, lettuce, asparagus, beans, yeast, animal liver, apples, citrus fruits, and more.

๐Ÿ“Œ 4. Early Pregnancy Checkup ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ“ˆ
After confirming pregnancy, expectant mothers should undergo their first prenatal checkup at around 12 weeks of pregnancy. They should also establish a maternity care booklet and undergo regular checkups.

๐Ÿ“Œ 5. Prenatal Diagnosis ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ“
Prenatal diagnosis can exclude major abnormalities and can be done as early as 8 weeks of pregnancy. Currently, the most common chromosome testing methods are chorionic villus sampling and peripheral blood screening. If necessary, amniocentesis can be performed between weeks 16-20 for further confirmation.

๐Ÿ“Œ 6. Avoid Over-Nourishing ๐Ÿฅฆ๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿฅš๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ›๐Ÿฅ›
During the early stages of pregnancy, morning sickness can affect the appetite of expectant mothers. In terms of diet, excessive nutritional supplementation is generally not recommended. It's best to follow personal preferences and eat what you like. For pregnant women experiencing severe vomiting, it's important to consume light and easily digestible foods. Once morning sickness subsides in the second trimester, there's time to catch up on nutrition.

Spicy foods and foods with extreme temperature properties should be consumed in moderation during pregnancy.

๐Ÿ“Œ 7. Be Cautious with Radiation ๐Ÿ“ถ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿ“ฑ
It's still uncertain which radiations in daily life might affect the fetus. Therefore, experts suggest that pregnant women keep a distance from the TV while watching, step away from the microwave when it's in use, and avoid keeping cell phones close to their chests.

๐Ÿ“Œ 8. Prioritize Rest ๐ŸงŽโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ด
Expectant mothers often experience fatigue during the early stages of pregnancy, making proper rest important. Overexertion can lead to miscarriage, especially for older mothers, those with a history of miscarriages, and those with certain chronic diseases. Rest is crucial during the early stages, and vigorous exercise and intense emotions should be avoided to maintain a positive mental state.

๐Ÿ“Œ 9. Cope with Morning Sickness ๐Ÿคฎ
Around half of pregnant women experience varying degrees of nausea and vomiting around week 6 of pregnancy. This is mainly due to increased levels of human chorionic gonadotropin in the blood. If the nausea and vomiting are tolerable, special treatment isn't necessary โ€“ it's a normal physiological phenomenon. Maintaining a calm attitude, getting enough sleep, eating small meals frequently, and opting for bland, easily digestible foods can help.

If severe symptoms persist, such as continuous vomiting or an inability to eat or drink, medical attention is necessary to rule out hyperemesis gravidarum. This condition can cause electrolyte imbalances and is life-threatening, so it should not be overlooked.

Mother's Nutrition Part 5 ๐Ÿคฐ๐Ÿป

4๏ธโƒฃ Types of Chinese Herbal Medicine Pregnant Women Should Avoid

As many Western medicines are chemically synthesized and some of them can have adverse effects on the fetus, many women experience a fear of using Western medicine during pregnancy. They often opt for traditional Chinese herbal medicine when needing medication. However, experts suggest that consuming Chinese herbal medicine during pregnancy is not always entirely safe. Many Chinese herbs contain complex mixtures of alkaloids and chemical compounds, and the interactions between different herbs can vary significantly, directly or indirectly affecting fetal growth and development. Therefore, during the first three months of pregnancy, pregnant women should not only be cautious about Western medicine but also about four categories of Chinese herbal medicine to prevent birth defects, premature births, or miscarriages.

1๏ธโƒฃ Highly toxic and hot herbal medicine: Substances like Aconitum, Cinnabar, Realgar, Euphorbia, Aconite, Rhubarb, Baneberry, Centipede, and Arsenic are inherently toxic. For instance, Realgar has been confirmed to cause birth defects, so pregnant women should absolutely avoid ingesting it. Cinnabar contains permeable mercury salts that can accumulate in the mother's body, leading to various deformities in newborns such as microcephaly, deafness, strabismus, and intellectual disabilities.

2๏ธโƒฃ Blood-activating and stasis-dissolving herbal medicine: Examples include Peach Kernel, Safflower, Bitter Orange, Calamus, Motherwort, Chinese Angelica, Prunella, Leech, Medicinal Leech, Pangolin, Frankincense, and Myrrh. These herbs accelerate blood circulation in pregnant women, stimulating intense uterine contractions that result in insufficient blood supply to the fetus, leading to poor fetal development and various deformities, or even miscarriages, premature births, and stillbirths.

3๏ธโƒฃ Lubricating and purgative herbal medicine: Substances like Talc, Aristolochia, Bindweed Seed, Winter Melon Seed, Coix Seed (root), Croton Seed, Daphne Genkwa, Euphorbia, and Gansui have effects that promote urination and bowel movements. They can stimulate the digestive system, excite the uterus, and trigger reflexive contractions, causing unstable embryo implantation and resulting in miscarriages or premature births.

4๏ธโƒฃ Aromatic and volatile herbal medicine: Examples are Clove, Agarwood, and Musk. They can induce uterine contractions through the nervous system, potentially leading to premature labor or miscarriages. Many artificial abortion or induction drugs contain Musk as one of their primary components.
Many Chinese herbal medicines with toxic side effects are often formulated in traditional Chinese medicine products. Thus, it is essential to exercise caution when using such medicines. Pregnant women should avoid using Chinese medicine that is marked as prohibited or restricted for pregnancy. If necessary, they can opt for alternative medications with similar effects but no side effects. Of course, harmful Chinese herbal medicines for pregnant women are a minority in the vast array of herbal remedies. Traditional Chinese medicine, as natural remedies, generally carries fewer side effects compared to Western medicine. Therefore, when pregnant women are ill, seeking medical attention is crucial. Consulting a doctor will help weigh the pros and cons of medication options to ensure the health of both the mother and the fetus.

Diaper Rash Care ๐Ÿงก
Has your little one ever had a diaper rash issue? Diaper rash generally stems from a few reasons:

1. Improper Diaper Selection ๐Ÿ’ฆ
If your baby's skin is sensitive, using the wrong type of diapers (non-breathable, not soft, etc.) can irritate their bottom and lead to diaper rash. Regardless of the type of diaper, it's recommended to start with a trial pack.

2. Infrequent Diaper Changes โš ๏ธ
When you don't change the diaper promptly after your baby wets or soils it, their skin remains soaked in moisture, causing diaper rash. Babies tend to have frequent bowel movements (2-3 times a day) and urination (around 10-14 times a day). Not changing diapers in time can trap moisture and result in a rash due to lack of ventilation.

3. Inadequate Cleaning ๐Ÿ’ฉ
Many parents, for the sake of convenience, simply wipe their baby's bottom with tissue after bowel movements without proper cleaning. This can leave traces of f***s on the skin, leading to diaper rash in a damp and irritating environment. Overcleaning or excessive friction can also contribute to diaper rash.

4. Moist Environment for the Bottom ๐Ÿฅถ
After washing your baby's bottom, ensure it's completely dry before putting on a diaper. Babies' skin folds can trap moisture, and if the bottom is not dried properly, extended exposure to a damp environment can cause diaper rash.

How to Care for a Baby's Diaper Rash? ๐Ÿšผ

1. If the rash is due to skin sensitivity, change to a different brand of diapers. Opt for reputable manufacturers and higher-quality disposable diapers.

2. Change diapers frequently to keep the baby's bottom dry. After cleaning, allow the bottom to air-dry before applying diaper cream.

3. If the diaper rash is severe, consult a doctor for advice and potential medication.

4. When feasible, consider cleaning your baby's bottom with warm water after bowel movements. This can be more comfortable for the baby compared to wiping.

5. Avoid using wet wipes directly on the baby's bottom, as some moisturizing ingredients in wipes might irritate the skin.

6. If indoor conditions permit, let your baby's bottom air-dry regularly.

7. Steer clear of using baby powder, as it may irritate the baby's skin.

Miscarriage ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜ข
Part 1~
Miscarriage refers to the loss of a fetus before 20 weeks of pregnancy. Most miscarriages occur within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Bleeding and cramping are common signs of a miscarriage.
If a pregnant woman is unaware of her pregnancy, she may experience a miscarriage and mistake it for a normal period.
To determine if a miscarriage has occurred, the doctor will examine the cervix (lower part of the uterus).
An ultrasound examination (dynamic image of the interior of the uterus) will also be performed.
Many women who have had one miscarriage can get pregnant again and have a healthy baby.
However, the risk of miscarriage increases with each occurrence; the more miscarriages a woman has had, the higher the likelihood of another one.
If a woman experiences multiple miscarriages, it may be necessary to see a doctor before attempting another pregnancy.
The doctor can try to increase the chances of a successful subsequent pregnancy.

What causes miscarriage?
Doctors may not always know the exact causes of miscarriage. Miscarriage is not caused by sudden emotional shocks, such as receiving bad news. Additionally, minor injuries like slipping or falling do not cause miscarriage. However, severe injuries, such as serious accidents, can lead to miscarriage.
Causes of miscarriage in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy

Fetal issues, such as congenital defects or genetic disorders. Sometimes, the fetus may have severe defects, resulting in a survival period of no more than one to two months in the womb. Most miscarriages within the first 12 weeks are caused by serious defects.
Causes of miscarriage between 13 and 20 weeks of pregnancy
Often, doctors cannot identify the specific causes of miscarriage during this stage. However, they may be able to identify one of the following reasons:
Problems with the reproductive organs, such as uterine fibroids, scar tissue, bicornuate uterus, or cervical incompetence.
Incompatibility of blood types between the fetus and the mother (Rh incompatibility).
Substance use, such as co***ne, alcohol, or to***co.
Severe trauma.
Infections, such as cytomegalovirus or rubella.
Untreated health conditions during pregnancy, such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, or hypertension.
Causes of recurrent miscarriage
If there have been several miscarriages, doctors may look for issues such as:
Blood that clots easily within the mother's body.
Chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus inherited from either parent.

Fetal Movement๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿ‘‹

Before giving birth, expectant mothers can only establish communication with their child through "fetal movement," and indeed, the baby uses "fetal movement" to convey information to the mother. Mothers can choose to lie on their side or sit down and count the approximate number of fetal movements per hour.

Generally, the normal range of fetal movements is 3-5 times per hour. Mothers can use this value as a reference to determine if the baby's movements are normal. Normal fetal movements indicate good placental function, adequate oxygen supply to the fetus, and healthy fetal development. If the fetal movements are less than 20 times in 12 hours or fewer than 3 times in 1 hour, it often indicates a possible oxygen deficiency in the fetus, requiring timely examination and observation of the fetal condition. It should be noted that the strength and frequency of fetal movements vary greatly between individuals. Some babies may have more than 100 movements within 12 hours, while others may only have 30-40 movements. As long as the fetal movements are regular, rhythmic, and the variation curve is not significant, it indicates normal fetal development.

There are four times when fetal movements are more frequent:
โ–ผ After the mother eats ๐Ÿœ๐Ÿฅ—๐Ÿฅ›
When the mother eats, she needs to supply energy to herself and the child. After eating, the mother feels energized and in a good mood, and the baby naturally feels the supply of energy, resulting in more strength to move. Especially after eating sweets, the baby will be very happy. However, pregnant women should try to control their intake of sweets to prevent gestational diabetes.

โ–ผ When the mother listens to music ๐ŸŽป๐ŸŽผ๐ŸŽง
There is a lot of music that can be used for prenatal education. Scientific research has shown that babies who frequently listen to music during pregnancy have faster intellectual and physical development than ordinary children. When the baby hears music, they feel relaxed and perceive the environment as safe, which promotes better development and growth. The baby also responds to the music, resulting in frequent fetal movements.

โ–ผ Before the mother sleeps ๐Ÿ˜ด
The time before sleep is very peaceful and calm. In a quiet environment, the mother is more likely to detect the baby's fetal movements. Although the baby does tend to be more active at night, resulting in more fetal movements, it could also be because mothers are more sensitive to perception at night, thus noticing the baby's movements.

โ–ผ When the mother relaxes ๐Ÿ“ป๐Ÿ“”
When mothers are in a relaxed environment, the baby can perceive the mother's joyful mood and feel happy, leading to more frequent fetal movements as a way to interact with the mother. For example, pregnant women often feel frequent fetal movements when taking a bath. However, it could also be because the bathwater is too hot, causing the baby to perceive environmental changes and respond with movements.

The longer the baby stays in the mother's womb, the more noticeable the fetal movements become. At around 30 to 32 weeks, the number of fetal movements reaches its peak. The baby seems to be in an excited state, with extremely frequent movements that can almost startle the expectant mother. But is this good or bad?

To alleviate anxiety caused by fetal movements, here are two methods. Although in most cases fetal movements are normal, mothers should not take it lightly and should master these two methods to completely avoid anxiety caused by fetal movements.

Learn to check the fetal heartbeat ๐Ÿ‘‚โค๏ธ
Generally, in the later stages of pregnancy, mothers should monitor the fetal heart rate anytime and anywhere. The normal heart rate of a fetus is usually between 120 and 160. If mothers notice any abnormalities in the fetal heart rate, such as rapid or slow rates, or irregular intervals, they must immediately seek medical help and not delay, as the fetal condition needs to be promptly examined and observed.
After six months of pregnancy, expectant fathers can place their ears on the mother's abdomen to hear the baby's heartbeat, which sounds like the ticking of a clock.

Use a home fetal Doppler ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ’“
Expectant mothers should pay attention to the position where the doctor places the Doppler during a fetal heart check. At home, they can use a home fetal Doppler to locate the fetal heartbeat correctly and listen to it repeatedly. When the pregnancy is less than five months, the fetal heartbeat is usually heard below the navel and on both sides of the midline. From the sixth to eighth month of pregnancy, the position of the fetal heartbeat will move upward. In the late stages of pregnancy, the position of the fetal heartbeat becomes more fixed, and paying attention to how the doctor listens to the heartbeat is sufficient.
When using a fetal Doppler, remember "2 less, 1 more" to avoid disturbing the fetus:

Fewer times ๐Ÿค
It is advisable to use it 1-3 times per day. Experts recommend using the fetal Doppler correctly based on the stage of pregnancy:
In the early stages of pregnancy, use it once a day.
In the middle stages of pregnancy, with regular fetal movements, use it every 2-3 days.
In the late stages of pregnancy, which are critical for fetal monitoring, and in cases where the fetus may have umbilical cord entanglement or respiratory distress, it is necessary to strengthen fetal heart monitoring. It is suitable to increase the frequency of using the fetal Doppler to 2-3 times per day.

Less time ๐Ÿค
Each session should not exceed 2-3 minutes, and the stable fetal heart rate should be between 120 and 160. Due to changes in the pregnant woman's physical condition and activities such as digestion, which require increased oxygen supply, pregnant women who are prone to symptoms of fetal hypoxia should schedule the Doppler usage according to their own daily routines:
Within 30 minutes after waking up
Within 60 minutes after a meal
Within 30 minutes before going to bed at night
Pay attention to checking the fetal heart rate during these three time periods each day.

Additionally, it is important to pay more attention to fetal movements and listen to the fetal heartbeat promptly when there are abnormal movements. This can help detect fetal intrauterine hypoxia in a timely manner. In general, if everything is normal with the baby, using the fetal Doppler once a day is sufficient. However, if the baby has umbilical cord entanglement or the mother has high blood pressure, it is recommended to use it three times a day. If any abnormal heartbeat is detected, it is best to regularly visit the hospital for professional fetal heart monitoring instead of relying solely on home fetal Doppler devices.

Hazards of Maternal Malnutrition

Nutrient deficiency can lead to anemia during pregnancy ๐Ÿฉธ
Approximately 20% of pregnant women suffer from varying degrees of anemia. The main causes are often attributed to deficiencies in iron, folic acid, or vitamin B12. Pregnancy-related anemia not only affects the mother's health but also influences the growth, development, neurological behavior, and intelligence level of the fetus after birth.

Nutrient deficiency can lead to gestational hypertension ๐Ÿ˜จ
Gestational hypertension is a unique pregnancy-related condition with an incidence rate of about 7-12%. It is a significant cause of maternal and perinatal mortality. The exact causes are not fully understood but are generally believed to be associated with factors such as genetics, immunity, anemia, hypoalbuminemia, hyperlipidemia, and deficiencies in trace elements like calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, as well as low socioeconomic status. Gestational hypertension can cause changes in various organs throughout the body, and if left untreated, can lead to severe adverse outcomes.

Malnutrition affects pregnancy outcomes ๐Ÿ‘ผ
The relationship between prenatal nutrition and miscarriage, preterm birth, and premature rupture of membranes is closely linked. Severe deficiencies in protein, vitamins, and trace elements can result in miscarriage. A decrease in copper ions in maternal diet can lead to reduced synthesis of fibroblast collagen fibers and elastic fibers, decreased elasticity of the fetal membranes, and an increased risk of premature rupture of membranes. Additionally, a lack of vitamin C can increase the brittleness of the fetal membranes and raise the occurrence of premature rupture of membranes. Furthermore, decreased concentrations of copper and zinc ions in maternal serum can contribute to overdue pregnancies.

Malnutrition can cause fetal malformations ๐Ÿšผ
China is one of the countries with a high incidence of birth defects. The causes of fetal malformations are complex, but the relationship between nutrition and fetal malformations has long been a topic of concern. For example, a deficiency in folic acid can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, as well as cleft lip, cleft palate, and neural tube defects in newborns.

Malnutrition can result in delayed intellectual development ๐Ÿง
Scientists in the field of eugenics have found in experiments that if there is malnutrition during the embryonic stage, the number of brain cells is only 82% of those in a healthy brain. Even if the nutrition improves after birth, the intellectual development remains difficult to recover. Prolonged malnutrition can cause significant delays in the development of the brain, cerebellum, or brainstem compared to healthy infants, equivalent to only 1/2 to 3/4 of the development seen in healthy children.

Changes in the Breasts During Pregnancy

After becoming pregnant, a woman's ni***es become sensitive and uncomfortable. However, these changes are normal and occur due to the increased levels of estrogen during pregnancy, which stimulate the development of the milk ducts in the breasts. Throughout the entire pregnancy, the breasts undergo changes along with the development of the fetus. These changes can include darkening of the areolas and enlargement of the milk ducts. Most expectant mothers experience discomfort and breast tenderness, which is similar to the premenstrual symptoms but often more intense. In some cases, a small number of pregnant women may even experience leakage of milk, which is the body's preparation for breastfeeding after delivery. Typically, breast soreness is most severe between the fourth and sixth weeks after conception.

Breast tenderness tends to improve noticeably after the first three months of pregnancy, as the body adapts to the hormonal changes of pregnancy. There is no need to be overly concerned as this is a physiological preparation for lactation after childbirth.

Pregnant women can employ the following methods to alleviate breast tenderness:

Apply heat - Applying a warm towel to the breasts can significantly prevent the formation of breast lumps, promote clear milk ducts, and facilitate milk secretion.

Massage - Gentle massaging of the breasts can help alleviate breast tenderness and promote future milk production. During this period, the breasts are very delicate, so care should be taken to perform gentle movements and avoid damaging the ni***es.

Wear properly fitting bras - Wearing a well-fitting bra not only prevents breast sagging and provides proper breast support but also helps relieve breast tenderness. Choose bras that are loose, made of soft fabric, and have no seams near the ni***es. Cotton bras are more comfortable and breathable compared to blended fabrics, reducing external pressure on the breasts. Consider purchasing bras with slightly larger sizes to accommodate breast enlargement and abdominal growth, which may increase by 1-2 sizes (both cup and band size). The easiest and most convenient option is to visit a maternity store and purchase specialized maternity bra.

"The Golden 24 Hours after Newborn's Birth โฐ

After experiencing ten months of pregnancy, our fetus transforms from a tiny fertilized egg into a mature fetus, ready to embark on a life in this world. So, what does our newborn go through in the first 24 hours after birth? Let's take a look at how a child spends their first day in this world.

Inside the womb, the fetus is surrounded by warm amniotic fluid and receives oxygen through the umbilical cord. Whether born via cesarean section or through the birth canal, newborns will experience these six things within the first 20 minutes of birth:

1. Recording the historic moment ๐Ÿ“ท
The exact time of the child's birth needs to be recorded down to the minute. The first cry the child hears upon birth helps determine their time of birth, including their Chinese zodiac sign.

2. Cutting off the connection with the mother - the umbilical cord ๐Ÿ‘ถ
The umbilical cord is the cord that connects the placenta to the fetus, supplying nutrients. Once the placenta is delivered, the umbilical cord can no longer provide nourishment to the baby. After birth, doctors will cut and clamp the umbilical cord. Parents must then take care of it to prevent umbilical infections. Usually, it will fall off on its own and become the baby's belly button within about two weeks.

3. Learning to breathe independently ๐Ÿ‘ƒ
A cry signifies the arrival of a new life and marks the start of the baby's lung function. During the fetal stage, the lungs develop and mature but do not function because there is no air in the mother's uterus. The baby is directly supplied with blood and oxygen through the umbilical cord.

With the baby's birth, a rush of cold air from the outside fills their lungs. The baby's chest expands as air enters, causing previously collapsed lung alveoli to inflate. Continuous airflow enters the lungs, delivering oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide. As the air passes through the vocal cords, it creates a crying-like sound. In fact, the cry at birth is triggered by the first breath and signifies the start of the body's organ functions and overall health.

If there is excessive mucus in the baby's mouth, nurses will promptly assist in clearing it, allowing air to enter the baby's body more quickly and facilitating the baby's ability to breathe independently for a self-sustaining life.

4. Cleaning the body and ensuring warmth ๐Ÿ›€๐Ÿป
The baby has some of the mother's blood and amniotic fluid on their body, which needs to be cleaned and dried promptly. Otherwise, the moisture can take away the baby's body temperature. Since the baby's temperature regulation center is not yet mature, the outside temperature is slightly cold for a newborn. Therefore, it is important to help the baby stay warm.

5. Taking life's exams, the initial assessment and the follow-up examination ๐Ÿ—’๏ธ
Within 1 minute after birth, the baby undergoes the initial assessment using the Apgar scoring system. Within 5 minutes after birth, the follow-up examination is conducted.

The Apgar score helps doctors assess the baby's overall health at birth. The test measures the baby's heart rate, respiration, muscle tone, skin color, and response to stimuli. Each item is scored out of 2, resulting in a total score of 10.

Usually, a score of 7 or above is considered normal. It is rare for a baby to score a perfect 10 on the first attempt.

6. Tailor-made Height and Weight โŒ›๏ธ
It's not good for a baby to be born too heavy or too light. Ideally, the weight should be controlled between 5 to 8 pounds. If the baby is too heavy or too big, it may be difficult to deliver naturally, resulting in a cesarean section.
Children born as macrosomic babies who are not properly controlled after birth are also at a significantly higher risk of developing various chronic diseases in adulthood, such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, and diabetes.
