Continuing the theme of my first major international tournament - Hastings 1979/80 - here is a critical position I reached with Black against the Syrian-English GM Yasser Seirawan. With the obvious 1.Nd5! White obtains an overwhelming strategic advantage (+3.73). Instead Yasser chose what John Nunn described as quite the worst positional move he had ever seen - 1.b5?? - allowing both knight AND rook into the game. After 1...Nc5 the evaluation has swung dramatically in Black's favour (-4.71). 2.Nd5 came one move too late, but now Ra3! , with a dirty little check on d3, and Qg5 to come, leaves the Black forces swarming all over White.
