"Suatu hari, Jibraila datang dalam rupa seorang lelaki Arab lalu beliau duduk menyan- darkan lututnya pada lutut Rasulullah dan berkata, "Wahai Rasulullah, apakah Islam?" Baginda menjawab, 'Bahawa kamu mem- persaksikan tiada Tuhan selain Allah dan aku adalah Rasulullah, kamu dirikan solat, kamu keluarkan zakat, kamu berpuasa pada bulan Ramadan dan kamu menunaikan haji jika kamu mampu dengan perbekalan. Jibril berkata, 'Kamu benar. Kemudian, beliau bertanya lagi. Apakah iman?' Nabi menjawab, Bahawa kamu beriman dengan Allah, para malaikat- Nya, kitab-kitab-Nya, para Rasul-Nya, hari akhirat dan kamu beriman dengan takdir baik dan buruknya. Jibril berkata, 'Kamu benar. Kemudian, ia bertanya, 'Apakah ihsan?" Rasulullah menjawab, 'Bahawa kamu menyembah Allah seolah-olah kamu melihat- Nya dan jika kamu tidak berupaya melihat-Nya, maka kamu (menyedari) bahawa Dia melihat kamu.' Jibril berkata, 'Kamu benar"

Dalam ayat ini, hadis membezakan antara kedua-duanya (iman dan Islam). Islam dengan pengertian penyerahan diri dan kepatuhan secara zahir merupakan tempat yang dikongsi sama ada oleh Mukmin ataupun munafik, maka ia adalah permulaan.
Kemudian jika Islam itu disertai dengan ke- ikhlasan dalam mempercayai Allah. para malaikat-Nya, kitab-kitab-Nya, para rasul-Nya, hari akhirat dan mengaku dengan teguh baha- wa takdir baik dan buruk itu daripada Allah dengan erti apa yang ditakdirkan menyimpang daripada-Nya dan apa yang ditakdirkan me- nyimpang tidak akan mengenai-Nya, maka dia adalah Mukmin yang sebenar.
Kemudian, jika dia mengumpulkan antara Islam dengan tasdiq (pembenaran) dan dia sertakan jihadnya dengan musyahadah dan apa yang ghaib menjadi seperti disaksikan, maka itulah ihsan yakni kesempurnaan.
Oleh itu, Islam adalah permulaan, iman adalah pertengahan dan ihsan ialah ke- sempurnaan.
