Supporting autistic and neurodivergent children, and empowering families.

02/07/2026

It can be very overwhelming when we notice something feels and seem different about our child’s development and behaviour. There’s a lot of information online, opinions from people around us, and it can be hard to know what is helpful.

We don’t need to have all the answers.
Having one question is enough, and all we have to do is take that first step.

And that first step can be asking questions or seeing our child’s strengths and challenges. Speaking to a trusted professional, and be open to learn more each day.

In my line of work, and the families I have supported so far, it’s important to highlight that seeking support doesn’t mean something is wrong. When families seek support, it means they’re taking courage to understand how to make things work for the child and for the family.

And that’s it. Every journey starts with one small STEP 💗

Contact STEP at +6014-6457136 to take that first step.

Here to support families,
MJ

Sometimes, when we change how a toy is presented, it creates new learning opportunities. With one simple wooden transportation puzzle, you can target a lot and these involves:

• fine motor skills
• problem solving
• motor planning
• visual discrimination

And the goal is to make it just challenging enough for our child’s current skill level. Not to make the play harder for our kids.

This is appropriate for children who can already complete the puzzle independently & you want to amp up the challenge a bit.

Some behaviours that we observe / see / experience may be our child’s response to sensory discomfort or overwhelm.

It could be them telling us their discomfort so we need to consider noise, lighting, textures, and other surrounding stimuli before we immediately think of them just engaging in “bad behaviour”, “behaving out of nowhere”, etc.

When we understand and accommodate their sensory needs, we can create an environment where our children feel safe, regulated, and ready to learn/participate.

When we want to build communication opportunities, we don’t need to always or immediately expect our child to request or reciprocate vocally.

Following the child’s lead, while we provide language input throughout play is important too. Instead of expecting or prompting for a request, we honor the child’s next choice, and in this case, is to turn the stack over to start again.

And then we join the play by describing what’s happening. “Turn around.” “All fall down.” “All fall down.”

We label colors and narrate actions. This creates opportunities for language learning through meaningful interactions while we focus on keeping connection, engagement, and shared attention.

Traditional discipline may not address the underlying reasons behaviour, especially for high-support needs learner.

High support needs learners often need individualised support, and this goes beyond the usual traditional discipline approaches.

P/s: Many of us are familiar with the term “severe learners/autism”, but there is a growing shift towards more respectful and strength-based terms. As we move toward acceptance and understanding, the term ‘high support needs’ describes autistic individuals who require significant daily support.

A moment to share.

Sometimes when I work with children, I learn to admit that they are smarter than me and they know all the species of dinosaurs, animals, and even fishes that graced this earth.

So when I get questions like “what is this?”, and I saw a fish that I never set my eyes upon, you bet that I’m using my reading skills to my advantage to answer these children 😂
(Also the video was cut because I was looking for the name of the small fishes 🫣)

Attending a visual book, even when our child can’t read yet, we could naturally build up conversation especially when it’s on a topic they have high interest in.

I love moments like this 💗

Waiting, flexibility, communication, and regulation are all skills. These are not expectations for our child to automatically know.
Behaviour often improves after these skills are supported.
