Sometimes progress is a better test result.

But sometimes it’s much quieter.

A child attempting a sentence without being prompted.

Reading a paragraph they would once have avoided.

Remembering a new BM word.

Writing without immediately saying, β€œI can’t.”

As educators, those little moments matter to us.

Because before the results change, something else often changes first:

The child begins to believe they can.

We often want to see the results quickly.

Better marks. Better writing. Better comprehension.

But sometimes, we need to go back before we can move forward.

A vocabulary gap.
A grammar concept that was never quite understood.
Reading comprehension that needs strengthening.
The confidence to actually use English or BM.

In a 1-to-1 lesson, there’s room to identify those gaps and work on the foundations β€” without the pressure of keeping pace with a group.

Because stronger foundations can make everything that comes next a little easier.

Sometimes, the smallest things need the gentlest hands. 🀍

And perhaps children aren’t so different.

They may not always tell us when they’re worried, overwhelmed or unsure of themselves. Sometimes we see it in the hesitation before they try. The frustration when something feels too difficult. Or the quiet β€œI can’t” before they’ve even begun.

In those moments, what they need from us may not be another correction or another instruction.

Sometimes, they simply need patience.

A little reassurance.

Someone who sees the effort behind the struggle.

Because long after they’ve forgotten the lesson, they may still remember the person who made them feel safe enough to keep trying.

This Sunday, here’s to being gentle with the little hearts entrusted to us. 🌿🀍

We wouldn’t expect every flower in a garden to look exactly the same.

So why do we sometimes expect children to learn in exactly the same way?

One child may understand immediately.

Another may need an example.

Another may need to see it, say it, write it β€” and practise it again.

None of these ways is β€œbetter”.

They’re simply different ways of getting there.

That’s the beauty of 1-to-1 learning: we can teach the student in front of us.
