Have you ever helped your child revise something until they knew it perfectly...

Only for them to struggle when the exam question was 𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕕𝕖𝕕 𝕕𝕚𝕗𝕗𝕖𝕣𝕖𝕟𝕥𝕝𝕪?

That can be the difference between ʀᴇᴍᴇᴍʙᴇʀɪɴɢ information and truly ᴜɴᴅᴇʀꜱᴛᴀɴᴅɪɴɢ it.

One simple way to check understanding at home is to ask:

"𝘊𝘢𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴?"

You don't need the perfect explanation. Listen for whether your child can make sense of the idea without simply repeating what is written in the textbook.

And if they can't yet? That's useful information too. It tells us where the learning needs to begin.

Sometimes, the most important moment isn't when our child gets the answer right.

It's what happens when they get it wrong.

𝘋𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘩?

𝘋𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮?

𝘋𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘺, "𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴!"

Or do we give them a moment and say, "𝙄𝙩'𝙨 𝙤𝙠𝙖𝙮. 𝙏𝙧𝙮 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣."

Children notice our reactions.

And little by little, those reactions can shape how they feel about making mistakes.

We cannot take every frustration out of learning.

But we can teach our children that getting something wrong doesn't mean they aren't good enough.

𝗜𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Perhaps that's something all of us — children and adults — need to remember sometimes. 🤍

𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞?

Before assuming your child doesn't want to do the work, it may be worth looking at what is making the work difficult.

A small change in the question we ask can lead to a very different conversation.

Instead of:"𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙣'𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙙?"

Try: "𝙎𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪'𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙩."

The goal isn't to remove every challenge. It's to help children develop the confidence and skills to work through them.

But in the quiet moments.

Perhaps reading feels difficult.

Perhaps they're worried about making mistakes.

Perhaps they haven't found books that interest them yet.

Instead of asking, "𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠?" try asking,

"𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮?"

That small shift can open the door to understanding—and confidence.
