In second session of the “Stories Behind the Stories” series, we invited Lim Hui Ying, producer and host of the "Asam Social Observation" podcast, to share her journey from print journalist to podcaster.

Since becoming a journalist in 2008, Hui Ying has navigated the fast-paced routine of deadlines and field reporting through major moments such as the Bersih movements, the MH370 incident, and Malaysia’s first change of government. She later left journalism to further her studies and eventually changed her career path upon returning to Malaysia. However she began producing podcasts in her spare time because she wanted to explore whether Malaysia had entered an era of niche audiences, and whether self-media could succeed financially where traditional media struggles.

Asam Social Observation was launched in 2022 and has since run consistently with over 130 episodes to date. The podcast mainly introduces sociological ideas and books, while also discussing social issues, public policies, academic activities, and field observations. Occasionally, she also invites friends to discuss public issues they care about.

Running self-media enables one to have full control over what content to produce and when to publish. However, sustaining output requires strong discipline and persistence. While Hui Ying noted that producing podcasts push her to read more, perhaps the journalist-researcher inside her, her long-term passion and the desire to share, are also the key forces that keep her going.

“Podcasting is an unpredictable world,” especially within the local Chinese-language sphere. She believes that there is still a lot of potential despite the platforms and algorithmic limitations. What’s more important for the creators is to understand their own channels’ uniqueness, find the right audiences, and build meaningful connections with supportive communities.

A big thank you to Hui Ying for also sharing her insights on local and global podcasting trends that day. Although many students were not regular podcast listeners, her enthusiasm sparked their curiosity and led to a lively discussion afterwards. Hopefully more diverse local audio media will emerge, and may Asam Social Observation continue to grow, sustain itself, and share knowledge in its own unique way.

Topics in Media and Communication 课,有个Stories Behind the Stories的小主题,邀请了四位讲者来和同学分享自身的媒体经历与心得。

In the recently concluded February short semester, four speakers were invited to share their media experiences and insights with students who took Topics in Media and Communication course, under the theme “Stories Behind the Stories”.

Vivian Yap was our first speaker, sharing her experiences as both a journalist and a producer at KiniTV. That afternoon, she travelled through heavy traffic from Kuala Lumpur and after the talk, rushed back to the office to report the news. Yet during the two-hour session, she remained energetic and shared many vivid stories.

So what exactly does a journalist do? Not long after starting her job, she was assigned to wait outside the then PM’s house for updates in the middle of the night. She used to receive calls while at a shipping mall, asking her to immediately follow up on breaking news. In addition to covering routine debates and press conferences, she would have to chase down politicians for responses on specific issues. “You never know where you will end up working,” she said, noting that much of the job requires improvisation and learning on the go.

From daily news to breaking news to investigative journalism, Vivian has worked across different forms of reporting. She has also produced talk shows that bring together people on with differing viewpoints for dialogue or debate. While daily news helps the public to quickly grasp current affairs, she believes in-depth investigation and long-term coverage are more crucial for the understanding of the bigger picture. Journalists must engage diverse perspectives, maintain balance, and be clear in how they frame their stories, so that the public can appreciate the complexity rather than falling into simplistic, black-and-white or binary thinking.

In this fast-changing and unpredictable era, how can news media continue producing meaningful content while also finding ways to survive? Vivian shared some of the changes and experiments KiniTV is currently undertaking, but perhaps this is a question that requires collective reflection.

“At the end of the day, the most important thing is still the public interest.”

Thanks to Vivian for her sincere sharing and reflections, and hopefully she will continue to thrive on this challenging yet exciting path in media!
