Following the success of the Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) fundraiser event, two of our committee, Elizabeth and Vanessa had the opportunity to visit the DEBRA Malaysia centre located in Setia Alam on the 28th of Dec 2021.
DEBRA is a national charity that supports individuals living with EB by providing aid in bandage supply, milk powder, medications and selected daily necessities. They also organize awareness talks and activities to cultivate a supportive environment for the children.

Elizabeth and Vanessa had the privilege to have lunch with the co-founder of DEBRA, Ms Khatijah who shared about her personal experience with EB and the β€˜butterfly children’ at the centre.
Upon visit, the DEBRA centre appeared tidy with adequate well-thought-out facilities to cater for the needs of the EB community. There were ample of supplies ready to be given away to the children such as Mepitel dressings, Tubifast bandages, PediaSure milk formula, gauze dressings etc.
There are currently no formal events being held as the development of the centre has been badly impacted by the COVID19 pandemic. However, Ms Khatijah and a committed team of dermatologists are hopeful for the continual growth of their supportive EB community.

Written by Elizabeth. Please do reach out if you would like to assist in her continuing help towards DEBRA.

Due to difficulty in finding a cure for Epidermolysis Bullosa, children living with EB needs daily supportive care. πŸ¦‹πŸš‘This includes dressings that need to be changed on weekly basis, emollients to ensure good skin hydration and adequate nutritional supplement. 🍼All these are extremely costly and we can help to ease their burden by supporting them financially! 🎁

EB is characterized by extremely fragile skin, so fragile that the slightest touch can result in the development of recurrent, painful blisters and open wounds. It is hard to describe the full impact of living with EB and the effects on the whole family. There can be few conditions that are as painful and simply awful to live with. The closest thing to imagine would be if you perpetually had 3rd degree burns over most of your body. Children with EB are known as 'Butterfly Children' πŸ¦‹ because their skin is as fragile as a butterfly's wing. In severe cases it can tear like wet tissue paper at the slightest touch. Together, we can raise more awareness about EB & help DEBRA support children and adults with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) live life more freely and fully, with less pain and stigma and to reduce the impact on families affected by this rare genetic disorder! β€οΈπŸ¦‹πŸ‘¦πŸ»πŸ§’πŸ»

Each type of EB may vary from site of presentation and it’s severity, but one thing stands true and consistent across the board: the excruciating pain and suffering that comes with the disease.
