𝗘𝗣 28《像老朋友一样》
---
Mdm A was quietly enjoying the television while Mdm B sat nearby, looking a little sleepy as she reached for a spoon. Then slowly, Mdm B stretched out her hand and touched Mdm A’s hand. Mdm A did not pull away or seem disturbed; she continued watching the show, calm and unbothered. They sat there together like old friends, doing nothing, but still spending time together.

She was sitting alone, watching television, absorbed in the show. Then another senior came over, pulled a chair beside her, and gently tapped her to greet her before sitting down. They settled in together, watching the screen side by side. There were no words exchanged, no shared language, yet no awkwardness at all. In that quiet moment, connection spoke for them, proof that understanding does not always need words.

They exercised together in the garden, side by side, moving at an easy pace. Over time, their walks had turned into something familiar and comforting. The staff member often took her for walks, and now, when she didn’t see her around, she would quietly look for her. It wasn’t dependency—it was trust. A bond built through shared moments, fresh air, and simply showing up, again and again.

He sat with drum sticks in hand, watching as the rhythm began. Slowly, his hands followed, tapping in time, finding their own steady pace. There was no rush, no need to stand or move far—just simple motions guided by sound. With each gentle beat, he grew more engaged, smiling softly. In that quiet rhythm, the room felt calmer, and the moment belonged entirely to him.

Sometimes, it’s not that they are unable to do something—it simply takes a little support. In this case, this senior had difficulty walking due to Parkinson’s disease, but with gentle assistance, he was able to cycle and enjoy the moment.

This senior gently guided our staff, pulling them in to dance together as laughter filled the room. Soon, everyone was singing and dancing along—even those who didn’t join in were swaying and smiling from where they sat. Though he was new, he showed no hesitation in lifting the spirits of everyone in the centre. He was able to express himself freely and truly enjoyed the time he spent with us.

Just two Teochew speakers, becoming old friends simply because they shared the same language. They chatted as if they had known each other for decades—hours spent talking about plants, the weather, food, and stories from the past. There were no introductions, no need for warming up; the conversation began naturally and flowed with ease. Some people say individuals living with dementia can't make friends or communicate. Sometimes, all it takes is a familiar language to open a door.

Sometimes, communicating and connecting needs no words at all. A gentle tap on the shoulder to signal a change in movement, hands held softly to guide a dance, or a shared smile when their eyes meet yours. Sitting beside them during activities, accompanying them quietly, watching television, reading newspapers or magazines together. No conversation, no gossip—just presence. Sometimes, simply existing together is the deepest form of connection.
