At Welton, if there is one habit we want our learners to carry with them for life, it is the habit of reading. The ability to keep learning independently is a valuable competitive advantage that continues to compound over time.

For that reason, we intentionally allocate dedicated time for reading. In a timetable often filled with lessons, tasks, and deadlines, we believe reading deserves protected space of its own. It is not an extra activity; it is part of education itself.

Although many e-books are available for free, we continue to value physical books. A physical book offers something increasingly rare: focus. Without screens or digital distractions, students can give full attention to what they are reading.

Today, our Year 8 students spent their reading session with “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. Rich in timeless lessons, the book offers much to reflect on. One especially meaningful principle is “Begin with the End in Mind”.

It delivers a powerful truth: many people spend their lives busy, but without purpose. They work hard, chase demands, and stay occupied without ever deciding where they are truly going. This principle challenges us to begin with the end in mind. First, be clear about the end result, the person you want to become, and the life you want to create. Then work backwards with intention. When the destination is clear, your choices gain direction, your discipline gains strength, and your life becomes the result of your own design rather than by accident.

We do not want our students to read only for exams. We want them to read so they can think critically and ask better questions in life.
